The new Albion-Heatherington Recreation Centre celebrated its official opening February 7th.
To mark the occasion, young community members joined dignitaries David McGuinty, MP for Ottawa-South, John Fraser, Executive Assistant to the Premier of Ontario, Deputy Mayor Councillor Wilkinson, Councillor Diane Deans, Steve Kanellakos, Deputy City Manager of City Operations, and Aaron Burry, General Manager of Recreation and Community Services, in a celebratory shootout.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Vern White, Chief of Police, Ottawa Police Service.
“The opening of this facility is a great example of how a community can be united through recreation and sport,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “On behalf of the City of Ottawa, I commend everyone involved in this exciting project and wish residents many happy days at the new Albion-Heatherington Recreation Centre.”
The new recreation centre was built on the site of the Albion-Heatherington Community Centre, previously housed by three portable buildings. This new 7,000 square-feet facility is located at 1560 Heatherington Road. It features a new gymnasium with basketball and volleyball nets, a multi-purpose room and a meeting room, in addition to an outdoor puddle rink. An outdoor stage area can also accommodate community functions or performances and movies-in-the-park.
"A recreation centre is important to every community and nowhere is that more true than in Albion-Heatherington," said Councillor Diane Deans. "This centre will be an important place for children, seniors and families to gather."
Aaron Burry, General Manager of Recreation and Community Services praised the community associations and partners who aided the project for their leadership and vision. “Thanks to the vision and dedication of the many groups who collaborated and participated in consultations, I am sure the new programs and services offered will meet the community’s needs.”
Following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, the Albion-Heatherington Recreation Centre has incorporated a wide range of sustainable design features into the building that will reduce energy consumption, use of natural resources, impact on the environment, and improve residents’ health and comfort.
