Update on tickets and activities around the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship

The host organizing committee for the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship outlined the following updates on ticket availability and activities around the event.

Tickets

Tickets are still available for all 31 world junior championship matches, including Team Canada's round-robin games and all medal-round match-ups. There are fewer than 500 tickets available for Canada's opening day meeting with the Czech Republic on Dec. 26, another 500 for Canada versus Kazakhstan on Dec. 28, fewer than 750 for Canada against Germany on Dec. 29, and Canada's New Year's Eve meeting with Team USA.

Four games are nearing capacity, with fewer than 50 tickets available, most notably for the United States and Czech Republic game at SBP Arena on Dec. 28.

Team arrivals and schedules for Dec. 16-17

Canada – The Canadian squad continues its camp at CFB Petawawa today with team building and a practice. Senators owner Eugene Melnyk had breakfast with the team this morning. They will travel to Orangeville, Ont., tomorrow and will be there until Dec. 23. Team Canada media contact is André Brin, 403-540-8444 or abrin@hockeycanada.ca.

Czech Republic – Canada's first opponent in round-robin action, the Czech Republic is practising today from noon to 1 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the PowerAde Centre in Brampton, Ont. They will practise again on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Finland – Last year's sixth-place team arrives in Canada on Dec. 20 in Barrie, Ont. The Finnish squad will practise there until Dec. 23.

Germany – One of two countries to receive promotion from 2008, the German team will arrive in Gatineau, Que., to practice at the Robert-Guertin Arena from Dec. 20-23.

Kazakhstan – Last year's eighth-place team arrives in Canada on Dec. 18. They will practise at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ont., until Dec. 23.

Latvia – The other country to receive promotion from 2008 will be located at the Memorial Centre in Brockville, Ont., from Dec. 18 to 23.

Russia – The bronze medalists from 2008 will practise at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ont., from Dec. 19 to 23.

Slovakia – The seventh-place finishers from 2008 will be based at The Aud in Kitchener, Ont., from. 17-23. The Slovaks will practise from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at The Aud.

Sweden – Last year's silver-medal-winning squad is practising at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont., Dec. 16-23. They are on the ice today from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

United States – Team USA, who finished fourth in 2008, arrives at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ont., on Dec. 21 for practices and pre-competition games.

WJC did you know?

For the first 19 official world junior hockey championships, from 1977 to 1995, the format of the event was a round-robin competition. It wasn't until 1996 in Boston that the championship moved to have medal rounds. Canada defeated Sweden 4-1 in the gold-medal game on Jan. 4, 1996.
