An exhibit celebrating Ottawa’s rich hockey heritage officially opened its doors today at City Hall Art Gallery. The City of Ottawa Archives exhibit, titled 125 Years of Hockey in Ottawa, highlights the city’s hockey history - amateur, collegiate, and professional - through artifacts, images, and video. This year marks the 125th anniversary of the first hockey team in Ottawa. The Ottawa Hockey Club, founded by Halder Kirby and Jack Kerr in 1883, lost their first game against McGill College, but would go on to win several championships in later years. Today, countless children and adults, professional and amateur alike follow the hockey tradition. Another chapter will be added to Ottawa’s hockey history when the city plays host to the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship, December 26, 2008 to January 5, 2009 and the 10th Annual Bell Capital Cup, December 28, 2008 to January 1, 2009. 125 Years of Hockey in Ottawa runs from December 2, 2008 to January 18, 2009 and will feature visits by the Stanley Cup, on December 13 and 14, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the IIHF World Junior Cup, the Bell Capital Cup, and the Cosby Cup. Residents are also invited to see The Last Wooden Hockey Stick Made in Canada Project, from Robert Hopkins Public School, on display outside the gallery. Over 300 children, ages four to 11, participated in this project that turned some of the last wooden hockey sticks produced in Canada, into works of art. The City Hall Art Gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is available and admission to the exhibit is free. For more information visit ottawa.ca/heritage or call 613-580-2424 ext. 28425
