A four-acre field in the Centrepointe area was the scene of much activity this morning when Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Jim Watson helped the Deputy Mayor and two City Councillors uncover a sign marking the location of a new City facility. When completed in late 2010, the $38.6 million facility will bring two distinct programs — the Central Archives and the Ottawa Public Library Materials Centre — into one central location. Unveiling the sign with Minister Watson and Deputy Mayor Rick Chiarelli were Councillors Diane Deans (Chair of Community Protective Services Committee) and Jan Harder (Chair of the Ottawa Public Library Board.) In March 2008, the Province announced $20 million in funding towards construction of the new facility. “This investment is part of our larger commitment to strengthen Ontario communities and renew public infrastructure,” said Minister Watson, referring to the $450-million Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative. Deputy Mayor Chiarelli thanked Minister Watson again for the funding, and said: “This state-of-the-art facility represents an investment in preserving and delivering knowledge to the residents of Ottawa.” He added that having two City programs share space in the current economic climate is a “fiscally sound move that will enable both to be more efficient, and more effective in their service delivery.” Ottawa City Archives are currently housed in the former City Hall on Sussex Drive, which was bought by the federal government after amalgamation. The lease expires in 2010 with no option for renewal. The Ottawa Public Library’s technical services and its distribution centre are currently operated out of cramped space at the Main downtown branch.
