Today, the Ottawa Police Services Board and the Ottawa Police Service hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new West Division Patrol Station at 211 Huntmar Drive.
The facility, to be built and operational by December 2009, will consist of a 41,000 square foot freestanding structure complete with over 200 parking spaces, located on the 5.6-acre site.
Chief Vern White remarked, “We’re excited to start a new chapter of Ottawa Police by building a visible and accessible police station in the west end that will meet community and police needs. Like the rest of Ottawa, our service is growing and we need the space to remain operational and effectively respond to calls for service across the city.”
West end Councillors, including Eli El-Chantiry, Peggy Feltmate and Shad Qadri (Marianne Wilkinson is regretfully out of town); members of the Ottawa Police Services Board, including Chair Henry Jensen and the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing joined Chief White of the Ottawa Police Service to officially break ground for construction of the new police station.

BACKGROUND
The Ottawa Police Service new West Division Patrol Station, 5.6-acre location, meets both the strategic and operational needs of the OPS, especially being located just off of the Queensway (417). A list of site selection criteria was developed and the Huntmar Drive location suited all of the following criteria:
- Proximity and distance to “400”
series highways (rapid deployment and ease of movement across the city 24/7)
- Public transit friendly (staff
and public)
- Sufficient and separate parking
for fleet and staff
- Stand alone facility
- Development ready
- Acceptable zoning
- Secure site
Current population and anticipated growth indicate more rapid growth of population in the city’s west end (Kanata and surrounding areas) as opposed to the south end (e.g. Barrhaven/Manotick). Calls for service are also higher in that part of the city.
With the Greenbank station at capacity, design criteria for the new facility was established based on a 20 year staffing forecast. The Abbeyhill station will be closed and savings from that building will be diverted into the new facility.
The construction cost of the new facility is not known yet as it has yet to be designed. However, a capital budget of $18.5 million for land acquisition, project management, design and construction has been approved by the Police Services Board. The land was purchased for $2,044,000.
