Two crows, one picked-up in the Manotick area, and the other, in the Marathon area in the former Township of West Carleton, tested positive for West Nile Virus. This is the first incident of West Nile Virus in Ottawa this year.
West Nile Virus is contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito. In order to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes, residents are reminded to apply an approved mosquito repellent when going outside. Residents are also encouraged to remove standing water from around their homes because these waters are breeding grounds for mosquitoes that can transmit the West Nile Virus.
The City of Ottawa continues to implement its 2008 West Nile Virus Preparedness and Prevention Plan, a control plan to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus to the human population.
