The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to announce that, according to a survey conducted by Decima-Harris Research, more than 460,000 people attended Canada Day celebrations held at its official sites in the Capital Region this July 1st. The survey also revealed that 40.8% of the attendees were visitors from outside of the Capital Region.
"The National Capital Commission is proud to welcome Canadians from across the country in their nation's capital to celebrate Canada's birthday every July 1st ,"said Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer at the NCC. "We are extremely pleased that hundreds of thousands of people accepted our invitation and gathered in the heart of the Capital Region to celebrate our traditions and achievements, as well as the founding moments of our country".
The previous Canada Day survey, conducted by Decima Research in 2006, indicated that 314,000 individuals attended the celebrations held at official sites in the Capital Region that year ¾ including 116,000 (37%) visitors to the Region.
Activities organized on July 1st in the Capital Region to celebrate Canada's 141st birthday included workshops, demonstrations and performances, as well as evening concerts featuring JUNO Award winners and nominees. This year, Canada Day festivities in the Capital Region highlighted the 400th anniversary of Québec City, the 250th anniversary of parliamentary democracy in Nova Scotia and the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown of British Columbia. Activities highlighting these historical themes included a historical military parade in the heart of the Capital, as well as the traditional flag raising and performances from Les Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France on Parliament Hill. Visitors to the Capital Infocentre Plaza also had the opportunity to discover the original van that was home to Terry Fox during his Marathon of Hope.
The 2008 Canada Day survey was conducted by Decima-Harris Research on behalf of the National Capital Commission and included a telephone survey of 500 local residents, as well as an intercept survey with 6,800 participants on Parliament Hill, Major's Hill Park and Jacques-Cartier Park.
