Castor Valley Elementary School Grade 7/8 Room C will be one of nine OCDSB classrooms/schools showcased at the Entrepreneurial Adventure Ottawa Showcase on Thursday, May 29,2008.

The Castor Valley Grade 7/8 student venture is “A Camp of Their Own”. It is a camp for younger students from a deserving school who would not ordinarily have access to that type of experience.  Supported by their business partner Pamela Salvarkis (BMO), the students have been learning to plan, budget, organize, brainstorm, and work together to create a once in a lifetime experience for others. The students have managed to secure a camp facility, sporting goods, monetary donations, and plenty of volunteer hours so far. They have also planned a visit to the other school to create some early bonding.

The other OCDSB schools that will be featured are Adrienne Clarkson Elementary School, Broadview Public School, Elgin Street Public School, Fisher Park/Summit Alternative, Glen Ogilvie Public School, Jack Donohue Public School, John Young Elementary School, and Roch Carrier Elementary School.

The National Student Innovation Awards were designed to showcase and honor the spirit of originality and entrepreneurial accomplishments of students in Entrepreneurial Adventureprojects across Canada, during the past school year. Award recipients accept a plaque for their school and a cash prize to further develop their entrepreneurial programs.

The volunteer business partners work with classroom teachers to draw upon the abundance of enthusiasm and innovative ideas the students already have, and bring their entrepreneurial resolve alive. Students create their own “ventures” and work with their mentors to enhance their enterprising skills such as goal setting, critical thinking, communicating, collaboration, teamwork, leadership and risk taking.

Established in 1993, The Learning Partnership (TLP) is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to championing a strong public education system in Canada through innovative programs, credible research, policy initiatives, and public engagement.
