Nepean High School students were among hundreds of OCDSB senior students taking part in the fifth Era 21 Networking Breakfast for Young Canadians and Parliamentarians.

The theme of the Breakfast panel, offered by the J’Nikira Dinqinesh Education Centre in Ottawa, in conjunction with the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society, was The Global Power of Young Canadians. This year, the breakfast was designed to jointly celebrate Asian Heritage Month and Black History Month. Nepean High School Principal Rene Bibaud says, “The goal of the Era 21 Networking Breakfast is to support young people, who comprise our nation’s multi-cultural citizenry, and to encourage them to network with students of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds, which in the end will result in access to global opportunities.” Mr. Bibaud added that the program merges well with the Grade 11 and 12 curriculum.

Canada has a proud heritage of over 200 ethno-cultural groups, in essense Canada is a cultural microcosm of the world.  Without leaving home, Era 21 Young Canadians have peers from numerous backgrounds with whom to build networks and develop friendships.  Mr. Bibaud says, “The attitudes, knowledge, and skills that are formed in network building are powerful tools for success in a rapidly changing, multicultural and global world.”

United by Canadian values that stress the importance of sharing in each other’s cultures, young Canadians can become global citizens, open to learning, at ease with differences, and adept at negotiating cultural, racial and linguistic boundaries.
