The Merrickville Fine Art Festival will be indoors at the Merrickville Community Centre on Saturday, May 17th, Sunday, May 18th and Monday, May 19th from 10 AM to 5PM. Admission is $5.00; children under 12 free.

In its seventh year of operation the Merrickville Fine Art Festival provides the artists with a venue to showcase their art. The festival attracts artists from our own community as well as those from Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The exhibiting artists will exploit the intense colour blending capabilities of pastels, the manipulative characteristics of sculpture, the plasticity of oil and acrylic paints, the transparency of watercolours and the linear elements of graphite drawing. Artists will also explore other art disciplines and techniques such as photography, digital art, mixed media compositions and calligraphy.

The exhibit has a diversified array of fine art both representational and non-representational that should appeal to everyone’s palette.

Some of the local area artists participating this coming weekend include:

Rosemary Randall (Kanata) - Rosemary attempts to capture flashes of a past life and portray an atmosphere that invites one to step into the painting and yearn to return to that very place and time, using a high realism technique.

Terry Cowan (Nepean) - Terry's subject matter is comprised of landscapes, cityscapes and wildlife. His interest is in producingtectures, colours and shapes whether painting a chickadee or a steam train.

Karen Jennings (Kanata) - Karen paints on paper, silk and canvas. She is highly attracted to colour which is the basis of her work.

Barry Hobden (Ottawa) - Barry creates in his photographs not merely tracings of subjects but transformations of those realities into visual expressions developed from within as much as extracted from without.

Olaf Krassnitzky (Orleans) - Olaf is a multi-media painter who produces intricate, detailed and colourful abstract interpretations of his subject matter. He believes "Art no longer makes statemnets, it asks questions about a reality and its role within this reality".

Ken Ross (Ottawa) - Ken is an impressionist painter who uses a variation of the pointalist technique. His subject matter is diversified - heritage buildings, historical sites and landscapes.

Eileen Stevenson (Ottawa) - Eileen endeavours to preserve the beauty of wildlife, people and the things that surround us everyday.

Lainey Ponsford (Ottawa) - Her work is based on her thoughts and observations about spirituality and perceptions of reality.

David Houlton (Ottawa) - David describes his work as "romantic expressionism". His objective is to create a still life of plants and flowers together with figurative studies.

Margaret Chwialkowska (Ottawa) - Margaret uses her technique of "alla prima" which give her depiction of the Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills a timeless grandeur.
