MACKENZIE KING ESTATE IN GATINEAU PARK READY TO WELCOME VISITORS FOR THE SUMMER SEASON AS OF SATURDAY, MAY 10

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to announce that the Mackenzie King Estate, located in the heart of Gatineau Park, will officially open to the public on Saturday, May 10, 2008.

enchanting setting of Mackenzie King Estate

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to announce that the Mackenzie King Estate, located in the heart of Gatineau Park, will officially open to the public on Saturday, May 10, 2008

 

Visitors to this magnificent 231-hectare estate can share William Lyon Mackenzie King's love for horticulture and landscaping while admiring the romantic Victorian gardens, the picturesque ruins and the Waterfall Trail. History lovers can learn more about the fascinating life, career and era of Canada's tenth Prime Minister by visiting King's two summer havens, Kingswood and Moorside cottages or viewing short films on Mackenzie King's life and times.

 

Guided tours of the Estate ($) are also available for groups of 20 people or more, by calling 613-239-5100 or 1 800 461-8020.

 

New this year

New for 2008, on weekends and holidays from May 10 to September 1, visitors will be able to interact with characters from William Lyon Mackenzie King's past. Sightseers may even be lucky enough to run into Mackenzie King himself while enjoying a stroll around his country estate.

 

Music lovers will be able to admire the breathtaking scenery while enjoying special concerts by the gardens in the enchanting setting of Mackenzie King Estate (see attached fact sheet for dates and time).

 

Mackenzie King Estate is open to visitors:

May 10 to September 1, 2008:         weekdays from 11 am to 5 pm weekends and legal holidays, from 11 am to 7 pm.

September 2 to October 19, 2008:   weekdays from 11 am to 5 pm weekends and legal holidays, from 9 am to 6 pm.

The Mackenzie King Tearoom is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 11 am to 5 pm.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES FOR MOTHER'S DAY – SATURDAY, MAY 10 AND SUNDAY, MAY 11

Various activities will take place at Mackenzie King Estate this weekend for Mother's Day, including costumed interpreters from King's era, concerts by the gardens, and special activities and crafts for children. Visitors can also enjoy a light lunch or an Afternoon Tea at the Mackenzie King Tearoom, located at the Moorside cottage.

Gatineau Park offers 165 kilometres of hiking trails including the Lauriault and Waterfall trails accessible from Mackenzie King Estate. Nature interpretation tours ($), presented by Friends of Gatineau Park, are offered on various trails in Gatineau Park.

Gatineau Park is a four-season destination known for its vast natural territory endowed with hiking trails, forests containing more than forty species of trees, abundant wildlife, numerous lakes and the historic Estate. During the summer season, the Park offers many activities such as hiking, canoeing, camping, biking or swimming at one of the six beaches.
