comedy of manners comes to the National Arts Centre in the final production
of the 2007-08 NAC English Theatre season. Considered one of the
greatest comedies of the English language repertoire, Congreve’s play
has been produced in Canada
only once before. This is a unique opportunity for theatre lovers to
enjoy the linguistic athleticism and delightfully intricate plot revolving
around two of the most brilliant and independent lovers ever to walk the
stage: Millamant and Mirabell. This production is
directed by NAC Artistic Director Peter Hinton. Set and Costumes are
designed by Carolyn M. Smith (Macbeth). Lighting
Design is by Leigh Ann Vardy (Copenhagen, The Little Years). Troy Slocum
is the Sound Designer (Frida K.),
and Jennifer Brewin, NAC English Theatre Artistic Associate is Assistant
Director. Fight Director is John Koensgen. The company, in
alphabetical order, is: Damien Atkins as Mr. Witwoud; Caroline Cave
as Millamant; Diana Donnelly as Mrs. Fainall; Randi Helmers as Betty, Peg,
Mincing; Tanja Jacobs as Lady Wishfort; John Jarvis as Sir Witwoud; C.
David Johnson as Mr. Fainall; Nancy Palk as Mrs. Marwood; Mike Shara as
Mirabell; Michael Simpson as Mr. Waitwell; Maria Vacratsis as Mrs. Foible;
and William Webster as Mr. Petulant. Laurie
Champagne (Macbeth) is the
Stage Manager for this production, assisted by Elsa
Pihl. Running
time for this production is 3 hours including one 20-minute intermission. The Way of the World will open later in Toronto
at Soulpepper Theatre July 3 to August
3, with previews on June 30 and July 2. Proceeds
of the the Pay What You Can performance of The
Way of the World on Tuesday, May 13, will be donated by the NAC
English Theatre to the Actors’ Fund of Canada who are celebrating
their 50th Anniversary this year.
