On Monday, the City of Ottawa honoured the outstanding volunteers who give of themselves to better their communities and the lives of others. Mayor Larry O’Brien and members of City Council presented one group and 19 residents with Civic Appreciation Awards, while a number of organizations and individuals received certificates to highlight their valued contributions to the city’s quality of life.

"Tonight's award nominees and recipients are a wonderful example of what it means to be a volunteer" said Mayor Larry O'Brien. "Volunteers make a significant difference not only by enhancing the lives of others, but by making the City of Ottawa a better place to live."

Mayor O’Brien presented Citizen of the Year awards to Julina Throop (Youth), Paulette Dozois (Adult) and Joy Bergeron (Senior). The Citizen of the Year recipients also received a sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Kramer, entitled “Partners”, which represents the collaborative effort that goes into building a united community.

The Mayor and Ottawa 67’s Coach, Brian Kilrea, also presented the fifth annual Brian Kilrea Award for Excellence in Coaching to two recipients this year, Pat Messner, Adaptive Water Ski, and Jim Wagdin, Amateur Football.
