EarthCARE Expo 2008
Simon Jackson, founder and chairman of Spirit Bear Youth Coalition
(SBYC) – one of the world’s largest youth-run environmental
organizations will be this year’s guest speaker at EarthCARE Expo 2008.
He begins his speech at approximately 11:30 a.m.Thursday, May 8 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Confederation Education Centre Woodroffe Avenue at Hunt Club Everyone Welcome! Simon was invited to be the guest speaker because he is proof positive that kids can, and do, make a difference on the world stage. At age 13, he heard about North America’s rarest bear - the white Kermode or spirit bear - and the adults' plans to develop the bear's last intact habitat on British Columbia’s central coast. He knew he had to help, and he also knew that his peers would be willing to make their voices heard. At the age of 18, Jackson’s Youth Coalition helped create an historic land-use agreement with logging companies, First Nations, all levels of government, and environmental groups to protect part of the bear's habitat and create a framework for sustainability. Spirit Bear Youth Coalition is one of the world’s first all youth-run organizations and the first involved in this issue. Today the organization is backed by Dr. Jane Goodall, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., J.K. Rowling, Nickelback, and Kevin Richardson of the Backstreet Boys. It has a world-wide network in excess of more than 6 million throughout Canada and 64 other countries worldwide. In addition to hearing Simon Jackson speak - EarthCARE Expo 2008 will also showcase student artwork, poetry, essays, and some innovative environmental ideas. The philosophy behind EarthCARE is to provide a hands-on approach to educating students about environmental consequences and empowering them to make better personal choices. Environmental stewardship is alive and well in all 147 schools and program sites in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Through the EarthCARE program, students and staff are making an impact not only in their schools but in their homes and in the greater community. For example, EarthCARE teams in schools actively promote LOCO – Lights Off Computers Off. As a direct result, school audits indicate that students and staff have been able to avoid energy costs of approximately $1.7 million this year, through their focus on LOCO alone. The Master of Ceremonies for the event is CBC Radio's Adrian Harewood who hosts All In A Day. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board provides quality education to nearly 70,000 full and part-time students from junior kindergarten to grade 12, including adult learners enrolled at our Adult High School and Continuing Education programs. We operate 117 elementary and 25 secondary schools, as well as a number of specialized education centres and programs.
