The 47th annual Canada-Wide Science Fair returns to Ottawa OTTAWA – Ottawa will experience a burst of innovation and creativity May 10-18, when more than 450 of Canada's brightest science students descend on the National Capital Region for the 47th annual Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). It's a homecoming of sorts, as Canada's largest extracurricular youth-science event is returning to Ottawa for the first time since the very first national fair in 1962. During the week, students in Grades 7 to 12 from all of Canada's provinces and territories will showcase their projects for judges, local schoolchildren and the public. And this year, for the first time, there is a new environmental innovation category where art meets science. The students not only compete for close to $1 million in scholarships and grants, but they also foster friendships with fellow students from across the country. The University of Ottawa is host for the exhibits and judging, with other activities and celebrations taking place throughout the city. There will be a full slate of events including opening and closing banquets, a gala awards ceremony, tours of the city's cultural, scientific and recreational attractions, and a special scavenger hunt to end the week. More than 400 judges form local academic and research institutions, hundreds of chaperones and many volunteers will help make the week a success. The CWSF is the premier national program of Youth Science Foundation Canada (YSF). The event is coordinated by a volunteer Host Committee under YSF's guidance. "We believe that scientific excellence begins with Canada's youth," says Dr. Paula Piilonen, co-chair of the 2008 CWSF Host Committee. "They have already demonstrated excellence by being selected to attend this prestigious event and now they can showcase their innovative projects at a national level." An important goal of the event is to promote youth education as well as the passion and excitement of science. "These young scientists are the next generation of innovators and this is an amazing event to encourage and support their interest," says Reni Barlow, Executive Director of YSF. The participants are finalists from among 25,000 participants in 102 regional fairs that were held across the country in March and April. Many of the projects address concrete problems found in our everyday lives. They compete in a variety of categories, including life sciences, health sciences, physical sciences, biotechnology, engineering and computer science. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Friday May 16 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Ottawa Congress Centre. The public will be able to visit the students and their projects at a special viewing Saturday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the University of Ottawa.
