The Maple Leaf Brass Band (MLBB) of Ottawa today announced The First Annual BRASSFEST to be held in Ottawa May 30 and 31, 2008. The MLBB has been successful in securing the talents of a number of local and international artists for the festival. Performing will be Ottawa's well-known Capital Brassworks, an organization of brass and percussion players comprised of members of the National Arts Center Orchestra and others. Internationally known trombone soloist Nick Hudson from the UK will perform with the MLBB and other soloists, including Karen Donnelly, principal trumpet NACO, and Nick Atkinson, tuba NACO. Different programs on Friday and Saturday evening concerts will be presented at St Matthias Church, 555 Parkdale Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario at 7:30 pm. MLBB will be under the direction of David Druce, CD, MMM, bandmaster of the Ceremonial Guards Band. Ottawa's own MLBB is an all-volunteer not-for-profit organization fashioned after well-known British brass bands, comprising professional calibre band members from a variety of organizations: several from the now-defunct Royal Canadian Mounted Police Band, the Governor General's Foot Guards Band, and the Band of the Ceremonial Guards. There are music teachers, engineers, sales people, therapists, truck drivers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and many other occupations represented. Dedicated to providing high quality presentations of Canadian brass band music, MLBB have performed atthe Festival of Brass hosted by The Hannaford Street Silver Band in Toronto. Original works by band members Gabriel Major-Marothy and E F Lloyd Hiscock were performed as well as compositions by Canadian composer James McDonald Gayfer (1916-1997) transcribed for brass band by E F Lloyd Hiscock. Local performances have included The Cystic Fibrosis Fund Raising Gala, CHEO Teddy Bears Picnic, The Perley Veterans Center, The Tulip Festival, Christ Church Cathedral, Norwegian Embassy, Blessed Sacrament Church, Orleans United Church, Last Night of the Proms concerts, and many others. MLBB's mandate is to provide opportunities for brass players of all ages to perform in a world-class band environment, to provide learning opportunities for all, and to develop a library of Canadian Brass Band music.
