Mayor O’Brien, Councillors Maria McRae and Diane Deans, today outlined the newly enhanced Graffiti Management Strategy and also announced a Graffiti Symposium to take place on March 29. The Graffiti Management Strategy has been developed by the City of Ottawa to control the rise of graffiti and “tagging” in the city. The Strategy involves a combination of eradication, empowerment, education and enforcement and relies heavily on community partnerships involving residents, community associations and the business community. “As residents of Ottawa, it is important for all of us to have pride in our hometown, but also important to understand that this is Canada’s Capital and we have an obligation to keep the Capital beautiful for all our fellow Canadians,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “The strength of the Graffiti Management Strategy is its many community partnerships with residents and the business sector,” said Councillor Deans, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee. “Local BIAs, the Ottawa Newspaper Publishers Group and private companies such as Swish Maintenance Ltd., have all stepped up to help us control the growth of graffiti in our city.” A free half day Graffiti Symposium has been organized for Saturday March 29 at Confederation High School at the corner of Hunt Club and Woodroffe. Seminars will feature the various perspectives on graffiti, informative speakers, as well as a trade show to highlight graffiti removal tools and supplies. Interested residents and business people can register by visiting ottawa.ca/graffiti or by calling 3-1-1. “The most important aspect of the symposium is the concurrent seminars taking place in the morning. These seminars presented by subject matter experts provide valuable information and suggestions on a variety of issues dealing with graffiti,” explained Councillor McRae, Chair of the Transportation Committee. “There are seminars on graffiti removal tips and techniques, innovative enforcement strategies, case studies in prevention for residents and businesses, and a seminar on the new Graffiti By-law.” The City’s Graffiti Management Strategy is a cooperative effort, involving numerous internal and external stakeholders. Developing the Graffiti Management Strategy involved the City of Ottawa Surface Operations Branch, By-law and Regulatory Services Branch, Ottawa Police Services, community representatives and local businesses.
