Rideau Canal Skateway will be open between Somerset and Dows Lake for the first weekend of Winterlude
The National Capital Commission (NCC) is pleased to announce to users of the Rideau Canal Skateway that the section between Dows Lake to Bank Street will open tomorrow, Friday, February 1, 2008. As of 7 am, skaters will have access to 7 kilometres of the world's largest skating rink in time for the first weekend of Winterlude.
The NCC Ice Safety Committee deemed that the ice surface between Dows Lake and Bank Street is of sufficient quality and has reached the required thickness of 30 centimetres (12 inches). Tonight, maintenance crews will flood the entire Skateway to offer good skating conditions by morning (weather permitting).
The National Arts Centre (NAC) portion of the Rideau Canal Skateway will remain closed for the first weekend of Winterlude. NCC crews are working to open this section as soon as conditions permit. Pedestrians and skaters are asked not to venture onto the closed sections of the Skateway where ice is considered unsafe.
