Ken Dryden, the Ottawa Senators Foundation, and Sher-Wood together with all 320 students of Robert Hopkins Public School will kick off “The Art & Joy of Hockey” Project on Tuesday January 29, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. in the school gym.

“This is a great project”, said Dryden.  “It will give the kids of Robert Hopkins a chance to learn that hockey and the arts are linked.  And that this link is fundamental to becoming a creative and healthy Canadian in the future.”

The innovative project gives each child, aged 4-12 years old, a chance to learn about hockey by creating visual art, music, and dance. Classes will be guided by professional artists including, painter Christopher Griffin, musician Sarah Westbrook, and dancer Peter Ryan.

“We are thrilled to have a chance to bring art and sport together in the classroom”, said Julie E. Miller, principal of Robert Hopkins Public School.  “Some of our children have never held a hockey stick or skated.  This project gives them a chance to try.”

Painter Griffin’s lessons will commemorate the last wooden hockey stick made in Canada.  Sher-Wood is providing 320 sticks so that students can paint and create their own hockey stick based on environmental and social themes taken from their curriculum.

The project ends in May 2008 with an art exhibition and concert showcasing hockey, music, and dance featuring all 320 students.  Ten art pieces from the project will be reproduced, framed, and donated to Roger’s House and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

Funded by MASC and the Robert Hopkins Parent Council, the Art & Joy of Hockey project is supported by partners Gilmore Reproductions and Frameworks.
