The National Capital Commission (NCC) presents The Grand Finale, a one-of-a-kind musical fireworks show, on December 31, 2007 at 18:57. The Grand Finale is the closing event of the celebrations held throughout 2007 to pay tribute to the 150th anniversary of the choice of Ottawa as the Capital of Canada by Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1857. "Throughout 2007 the National Capital Commission has hosted Canadians from across the country as they gathered to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the choice of Ottawa as the capital," said Micheline Dubé, Chief Executive Officer at the NCC. "The December 31st Grand Finale event is the perfect way to wrap up a year of celebration in Canada's Capital Region." "The National Capital Commission is pleased to invite residents and visitors to witness this unique musical fireworks show on December 31, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the choice of the Capital of Canada," said Guy Laflamme, Vice-President of National Programming, Communications and Marketing at the NCC. Designed by Montreal's Royal Pyrotechnie Inc. company, this 17-minute show will include more than 2,500 effects, launched to the captivating rhythms of a special soundtrack. Residents and visitors will witness an explosion of fireworks from Nepean Point, cascades of light on the Alexandra Bridge, special lighting effects and projections on the shore of the Ottawa River, and pyrotechnical displays at the Ottawa Locks. The best locations to view the fireworks are Major's Hill Park in Ottawa and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau. In addition, the Canadian Museum of Civilization will offer free family activities from 5 pm to 9 pm on December 31. Members of the public can also learn more about the 150th anniversary of the choice of the Capital during a special broadcast on CFRA 580 AM and RockDétente 94.9 FM, on December 31, from 5 pm to 7 pm. Throughout 2007, the NCC celebrated the 150th anniversary of the choice of the Capital of Canada. The celebrations kicked-off during the official launch of Winterlude 2007 and continued with special activities and events, such as Opera Under the Stars, Orchestras in the Park, a Youth Forum, and an engaging lecture series presented by leading historians. The closing event, The Grand Finale, which is taking place on December 31, marks the anniversary of the day that the Queen's choice was announced by official correspondence. Additional fireworks at midnight on December 31 In addition to the fireworks display launched at 18:57 on December 31 in honour of the 150th anniversary of the Capital, the NCC will also present a 400-second fireworks at midnight to salute the 400th anniversary of the City of Québec, which will be celebrated in 2008.
