Visitors can enjoy improved facilities and refreshments at
new chalet on the island
The National Capital Commission (NCC) invites residents and visitors to rediscover Bate Island, a popular site for viewing the spectacular scenery of the Ottawa River and for walking, picnicking, kayaking, fishing and bird watching. The 3.5-hectares island is six kilometres west of Confederation Boulevard and is accessible to the public from the Champlain Bridge, either from the Ottawa River Parkway in Ottawa or the Aylmer Road in Gatineau.
The NCC is in the process of completing many improvements to the landscaping and facilities at this site including the creation of an oval open space area in the centre of the island where gatherings and informal activities can take place. This area will also house a seasonal chalet which will include a food concession, offering a light menu, snack bar and public washrooms. In addition, the NCC has provided a picnic shelter in the oval area, 30 new picnic tables throughout the island, as well as several new benches at lookout areas. A stonedust pathway will soon encircle the island with new heritage style pedestrian lighting, complementing the island setting.
Building on the shoreline stabilization work that was completed last winter, new native shoreline planting and fencing will be added this summer. The NCC has also been working to revitalize existing vegetation on the island by removing invasive plant species and adding trees and shrubs.
This type and sequencing of work will allow for continued public access to most of the island throughout the construction period. The NCC expects all works to be completed by mid-August.
The NCC invites everyone to enjoy this unique natural asset in the nation's capital and asks that care is taken by all to avoid damaging the fragile ecosystems and natural environments of Bate Island.
