BIG PROBLEMS, AND HOW TO SOLVE THEM by: Mr. Bjørn Lomborg, author of The Skeptical Environmentalist and initiator of the Copenhagen Consensus.
[Bjorn Lomborg - the anti-environmentalist's
environmentalist. While he throws some hard
questions at environmentalists, like why
exaggerate or overstate your case if things are
really that bad already? he has done a lot to
provide cover for the continued pillage and
destruction of the planet by corporate greed...
people may want to attend to ask questions, as it
were. I don't know if I have the stomach. -j.]
Canada’s International Development Research Centre
is pleased to invite you to a presentation entitled
BIG PROBLEMS, AND HOW TO SOLVE THEM
by: Mr. Bjørn Lomborg, author of The Skeptical
Environmentalist and initiator of the Copenhagen
Consensus
Thursday, October 7, 2004
7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
IDRC Auditorium, 14th floor
250 Albert St., Ottawa
Canada
Bjørn Lomborg likes to tackle big issues. In his
book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, he argues
that the global environment is actually getting
better - not worse, as many environmentalists
believe. And his latest initiative, the
Copenhagen Consensus project, is also generating
a lot of debate.
As Director of Denmark's Environmental Assessment
Institute, Dr Lomborg was the architect of the
Copenhagen Consensus project. With the
cooperation of The Economist, eight of the
world's leading economists gathered in Copenhagen
in May 2004 to discuss and prioritize solutions
to 10 serious global challenges. They focused on
how best to spend $50 billion over the next four
years to address such problems as malnutrition
and hunger, conflicts, communicable diseases,
sanitation and water, and subsidies and trade
barriers.
The “dream team” of economists assigned the
highest priority to measures to control and treat
HIV/AIDs. They also gave a high ranking to the
provision of micronutrients to attack
malnutrition, trade liberalization, and malaria
control. At the bottom of the list were efforts
to address climate change by reducing carbon
emissions, such as the Kyoto Protocol. The panel
considered the costs of such approaches
outweighed the benefits.
In his talk, Dr Lomborg will discuss the
Copenhagen Consensus project and its potential
impact on donors and governments. He will also
address issues raised by his book.
Dr Lomborg is an associate professor of
statistics in the Department of Political Science
at the University of Aarthus, Denmark. From 2001
to July 2004, he was Director of Denmark's
National Environmental Assessment Institute. In
1998 he published several articles about the
state of the environment, which led to the
publication of The Skeptical Environmentalist:
Measuring the Real State of the World in 2001.
The book ignited a radical debate on green
politics and has now been published in more than
10 languages.
Dr Lomborg is a frequent participant in
environmental debates, and has written
commentaries for The New York Times, The Wall
Street Journal, and the Globe and Mail. In
November 2001, Lomborg was selected Global Leader
for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum. In
April 2004, Time Magazine named him as one of the
world’s 100 most influential people.
