Students in Brookfield High
School’s World Voices Choir will add to their impressive list of
performances this Monday when they participate in the official kick-off of
the Canadian International Development Agency's Development Week. CIDA's
theme this year is Move Your World.
CIDA invited Brookfield's World Voices Choir to participate in recognition
of their passionate interest in human rights and development issues. The
students express their ideas in the language that everyone understands –
music. As a group they sing and speak in 17 different languages including
Spanish, German, Farsi, Arabic, Swahili, Zulu, Cantonese, Korean, Hebrew
and Sign. Choir members study music from traditional cultures around the
world and believe that by presenting the many voices of the world, they
will be able to kindle the spirit of humanity towards others.
Music Teacher Jeannie Hunter says that the students' current projects
include creating awareness of HIV/AIDS, establishing a student chapter of
the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Black History Month activities, and
developing a Fair Trade fair.
