2012 Season of Theatre Under The Stars is a Chance for Romance
Arts Posted by OttawaStart on June 27, 2012
As the sun goes down and the kids are tucked in bed, the adults sneak out of the house and make Strathcona Park their playground. This year the neighbourhood ruckus is all about Marivaux's The Game of Love and Chance, an updated romp newly adapted by the very popular actor-director Andy Massingham. From July 26 to August 26, Massingham and his creative team will transform this quiet Sandy Hill park into a refined Parisian garden estate with organic Art Nouveau architecture and natural set pieces evoking the romance of a Georges Seurat painting.
Audiences will embark in this adventure with young lovers Silvia and Dorante who reluctantly give the game of love a chance, but not before they attempt to turn the odds in their favour. Their servants are conscribed into the scheme with unforeseen hilarious results. In this performance, those wearing masks are not the only ones putting on a façade!
Furthermore, theatregoers this summer will not be relegated to mere spectatorship, but will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the play with Odyssey's crowd-pleasing Talk-Back Series. Sessions will include an interactive exchange with the cast and director, a talk on the dating scene, with guest speaker Irene Yarkoni, dating coach from The Single Option, a talk on the infectious music of Offenbach, and an opportunity to literally be dancing in the stands with the Company's Choreographer, Courtney Bamford. For the more audacious show-goer, Odyssey will play match-maker allowing audiences to have direct contact with the characters, through their online pseudo-dating profiles which will be found on our website blog at http://www.odysseytheatre.ca/
Last but certainly not least, Opening Night promises to have that extra oh là là factor, with a generous donation from Cordon Bleu Ottawa of a bountiful supply of petits fours desserts to be enjoyed by all after the show. Of note, Odyssey Theatre and The Cordon Bleu Bistro @ Signatures will also be making a special offering this year of – The Perfect Night: A Dinner & Show Package.
Performances are Tuesday through Sunday at 8 PM. Box office opens at 7 PM and Gate at 7:30 PM. Odyssey will have its traditional pay-what-you-can Saturday and Sunday Matinee series, with a special BBQ fundraiser event on August 04 in conjunction with Rideau Place on the River, benefiting the Canadian Diabetes Society. This year's Media Call is on July 20th at 1 PM, with photo and interview opportunities with the cast and director. To arrange interviews on a different date, please contact Marketing and Communication Officer, Mark Turcotte for alternative appointments.
