The National Capital Commission (NCC) and Habitat for Humanity NCR have formed a partnership to salvage the reusable building material from NCC properties that are slated for demolition.

Habitat for Humanity NCR relies on partnerships to provide and help build affordable housing for low- income working families in our community. For this purpose, through the donation of new and gently-used products from individuals, retail and other partners, Habitat for Humanity NCR ReStores,  give a second life to used building materials such as windows, doors, hardware, lumber and lighting fixtures and in so doing, has diverted over 600 tons of reusable building materials from our local landfills each year.

Over the years, the NCC has acquired or maintained a number of real estate assets to support the implementation its mandate and objectives. To carry out its mandate and achieve its objective, the NCC from time to time proceeds with the demolition of buildings, when they have reached the end of their life cycle.

In keeping with its Environmental Strategy published in June 2009, the NCC strives for green demolition in order to reduce waste, recycle and reuse as much as possible the construction materials from the buildings being decommissioned. It is in this search for alternatives to sending reusable and recycled materials to landfills that the NCC came into partnership with Habitat for Humanity NCR.

About Habitat for Humanity NCR:

Habitat for Humanity NCR is a charity whose mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners to break the cycle of poverty by providing affordable housing with interest-free financing that makes home ownership a realistic goal for low-income working families in the National Capital Region and in developing countries worldwide.

In Ottawa, there are two Habitat for Humanity NCR‘s ReStores. They are building supply retail outlets that accept and resell quality new and used building materials. All proceeds from sales at the Habitat for Humanity ReStores are used to support our local programs.

About the National Capital Commission (NCC):

The NCC is a federal Crown corporation whose mandate is to create pride and unity through Canada’s Capital Region by making the Capital a meeting place that communicates Canada to Canadians. As the steward of federal lands, national landmarks, parks, transportation infrastructures, buildings and a large real estate portfolio, the NCC takes great pride in developing and planning a Capital that today’s residents and visitors will enjoy and that future generations will treasure.
