Ottawa Fire Services is asking residents in the vicinity of the Home Hardware fire on Beechwood Avenue to stay indoors and take precautionary measures to avoid smoke from the fire. Residents of New Edinburgh between Crichton Street to Dufferin Road, Rideau Terrace to Acacia Avenue, Marier Avenue to Dagmar Avenue and Landry Street should remain indoors with all windows and exterior doors closed. Emergency Management staff also recommend that residents close any fireplace dampers and turn off all fans or heating systems to avoid drawing in air from the outside. At this time emergency staff are determining if smoke from the fire poses a health risk, but are asking residents in close proximity to the fire to take this precautionary measure. Other areas not directly adjacent to the fire may smell smoke but are not currently facing any adverse health effects. Ottawa Fire Services currently have over 70 personnel and 37 vehicles on scene as they continue to battle the fire. Beechwood Avenue between the Vanier Parkway and Mackay Street remains closed. Ottawa Police are redirecting traffic. Motorists are asked to find alternate routes while emergency crews respond to the fire.
