Thirteen Ottawa-Carleton District School Board schools are about to become more energy and cost-efficient thanks to the installation of 10 KW MicroFIT solar photovoltaic systems. The rooftop devices will be partially funded by the Renewable Energy Funding for Schools program funded by the Ministry of Education.
The installation by Energy Ottawa, in partnership with Ottawa Solar Power will be completed and connected to the local electrical grid early this fall. Chair of the Board, Cathy Curry said, “Each system will produce an estimated 11,500 kWh and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 2.2 tons annually." In addition, it is estimated that the 13 systems will generate an additional $120,000 per year in revenue for the Board.
The schools to have solar photovoltaic systems installed are:
D.Roy Kennedy Public School
Earl of March Secondary School
Emily Carr Middle School
Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School
Mutchmor Public School
Nepean High School
Osgoode Township High School
Queen Elizabeth Public School
Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School
Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School
Stittsville Public School
West Carleton Secondary School
York Street Public School
Chair Curry said, “This is an excellent example of how the OCDSB is incorporating environmental stewardship into its daily activities. We are pleased to be lowering the OCDSB's carbon footprint with the added benefit of generating additional funds which will be used to serve students.”
She added that another feature of the rooftop solar system is that each school will be equipped with a web interface allowing students and staff to observe the system's performance and results.
