Mayor Larry O’Brien today declared September Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Ottawa and presented Michael Peterson, Co-Chair of Angels in Action, with the framed proclamation.
Angels in Action raises funds to support ovarian cancer research, improve patient support and community awareness about ovarian cancer and honours women in our community who have fought or are fighting ovarian cancer.
Mr. Peterson discovered Angels in Action in 2006 when his wife, Wendy, was diagnosed with the disease. Both became strong supporters and active volunteers. Sadly, Wendy lost her battle in July 2009. Like the 1,600 women who die from ovarian cancer in Canada each year – more than four per day - Wendy was more than a statistic. She was a wife, mother, friend and colleague. Michael continues to support Angels in Action and is a strong advocate for the organization and for women living with the disease.
It is estimated at that 2,500 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year in Canada– about seven per day. Nationally, 1 in 7 women will at some point be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The symptoms are vague and often ignored by busy women. There is no screening test and the Pap smear does not detect ovarian cancer. Early diagnosis is critical in improving the chances of survival. If found early and treated the survival rate is as high as 90 per cent.
