As tens of thousands of people return to work and school next week and as this year’s unprecedented construction season continues, traffic delays are possible and the City of Ottawa is taking steps to minimize potential disruptions.
The City has planned for the extra traffic volumes by putting in place the following measures:
Traffic Incident Management Group (TIMG) has been activated to respond quickly to any incidents that can add to already heavy traffic volumes;
Representatives from Public Works, Transit, the Ottawa Police will be at the Traffic Control Centre to monitor traffic early next week and as required thereafter;
By-law Services will have extra Parking Enforcement Officers in the core and concentrate on the Albert/Slater transit corridor;
Duty officers from Ottawa Police will be available in the core early next week dedicated to enforcing traffic infractions and clearing intersections, additional patrol officers available as needed throughout the City;
Transit Services staff will be on-hand at the Slater/Kent stop and roaming Transit supervisors in the Slater/Albert corridor;
Transit will also have tow trucks on standby to quickly deal with any bus breakdowns that may occur;
Transit Public Information Department will be given real time updates of any delays from their control center, which will enable them to relay the information immediately to their customers;
One VMS sign board is in place on Slater and 2 more are ready and available for dispatch as needed;
Traffic Operations will be adjusting signal timing to clear congestion; and,
Corporate Communications will be on standby to help alert media on traffic related issues as required.
The City is also running a radio ad campaign to direct people to the City’s website, ottawa.ca for construction and traffic information. The campaign begins September 7 and will run for four weeks, with an emphasis on morning and afternoon peak traffic periods.
The City will proactively monitor and adjust its measures accordingly in the coming weeks to ensure traffic and transit move as efficiently as possible while also carrying out the unprecedented investments Council has authorized for our core public infrastructure.
