The National Capital Commission (NCC) wishes to inform the public of the rehabilitation work on the pedestrian esplanade along Confederation Boulevard, from where St. Patrick Street meets Murray Street (in front of the National Gallery of Canada) to Alexandra Bridge.
The work will take place until late November 2010 and will be on a distance of approximately 380 metres.
Since this section of the pedestrian esplanade will be closed to pedestrians, the bike lane located along Confederation Boulevard (on the west side) will serve pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists must dismount their bicycles to share the lane with pedestrians.
Signs will be installed to notify users of the pedestrian esplanade and the bike lane.
Motorists will not be affected by this work and will follow the current lane closures of Alexandra Bridge put in place by Public Works and Government Services Canada.
The NCC asks that motorists, cyclists and pathway users exercise caution and obey the signs during the construction period.
This work will ensure pedestrian safety, meet universal accessibility standards and maintain the level of quality required for the Capital’s most important destination route.
This work is being conducted as part of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund received by the NCC in January 2010. Works includes the refurbishment of the granite esplanade located near the entrance of Major Hill’s Park and the replacement of the existing granite pavers with new precast concrete pavers in order to establish a uniform approach throughout the boulevard.
For more information, the public may contact the NCC at 613-239-5000, 1-800-465-1867, 613-239-5090 (TTY) or 1-866-661-3530 (toll-free TTY) or visit the NCC’s website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca.
