Third Wall Theatre Company is the first of Ottawa’s major
theatre companies to open this fall with their exciting 10th anniversary season beginning with
Blackbird, by David Harrower. Winner of the 2007 Oliver Award for best new play, this will
represent the English premiere of Blackbird in Ottawa. The play opens on September 15th at
the Studio Theatre of The Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre.
In Third Wall’s season of “theatre that is,” Blackbird is provocative, gripping and chilling.
This two-hander tackles a very troubling relationship in a way that has left audiences around
the world mesmerized & stunned. “We could start the season with lighter fare, but why not
start with a bang” says Artistic Director James Richardson. Fifteen years ago Una, when
she was 12, had a relationship with Ray. They haven’t set eyes on each other since. Ray has
managed to establish a reasonably successful new life under another name, but Una, unable
to move on, has tracked him down. The two engage in an attempt to resolve their relationship
in an intense, explosive and daring piece of theatre, one that neither condones nor condemns
but that looks at the human tragedy of the situation. Well known to Ottawa audiences as a
veteran of the stage, this production will mark the professional directorial debut of Mary Ellis.
Of the play Ellis says “Harrower has created a contemporary tragedy of classic proportions.”
This season also marks the inaugural year of Ottawa’s only local resident acting company
from which all Third Wall productions will be cast over the next two years. Blackbird will be a
showcase for two of Ottawa’s greatest actors, John Koensgen and Kristina Watt, and promises to
be an intense display of acting magnificence. Richardson says “a play like this can only be put in
the hands of such experienced and talented artists.” The production is designed by resident set
and costume designer Sarah Waghorn with lighting by Guillaume Houet who works primarily
with francophone theatre companies. The production will be intimate, real and alive.
Blackbird opens on Wednesday, September 15th at 7:30pm at the Irving Greenberg Theatre
Centre. The production runs until September 25th with performances Tuesday through Friday at
7:30pm, Saturdays at 3pm and Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are $29 or $22 for students and seniors.
There are also last-minute rush tickets available and there is a pay-what-you-can performance
on September 14th at 7:30pm. Season subscriptions are also still available. For tickets call 613
236 1425 or in person at the IGTC box office (Holland & Wellington). For more information go to
