MelonFest and Pepper Pow. WOW! is back on Labour Day, Monday, September 6th, from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on the grounds of Acorn Creek Garden Farm near Carp, Ontario.
Come enjoy this summer sun’s sweetness and those hot, hot days with the rare combination of the farm’s wide palate of luscious melons and peppers whose taste range goes from mellow to ouch!
The good folks at Acorn Creek are expecting that many of the 140 melons that they grown on the farm to be ripe and at their flavourful peak by Labour Day.
“You can’t compare fully ripe melons, picked at their prime, to those you see in the stores,” said Andy Terauds whose wife, Cindy, is co-owner of the farm.
“When melons are field-ripened they’re full of juice and flavour. They pack the sort of sweet, aromatic punch that wakes up your taste buds and makes you want more, more, more!”
The farm grows 21 types (140 varieties) of melons – Crenshaw, Canary, Charentais, Golden Crispy, Butterscotch, Hami, Oriental, Tropical, Ananas, all colours and types of watermelon ... the list goes on. Each one is different in texture and taste. So that these differences can be really appreciated there’s a free tasting table where everyone is invited to try before you buy ... or simply try!
Then there are the peppers. These come in an “incredible variety of colours, shapes and heat levels” according to Andy.
“We grow 146 varieties of peppers, from the sweet to the scorching,” he says. A free sampling of the varieties from sweet to the hot-hotter-hottest will also be featured at a tasting table where Andy takes a sadistic pleasure in “watching the macho types go for the hottest varieties and get singed.”
There’s lots to see, and lots to do from cooking demonstrations by local chefs, wagon rides through the vegetable fields, guided tours of the melon and pepper patches, watermelon eating and seed spitting contests ... with prizes ... and much more.
Local artisans and vendors will be on hand with food, baking, preserved meats, hot sauces, preserves and crafts. The Farm Market is also open for business with its usual range of fresh-from-the-field seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Admission, parking, competitions, events and ... of course ... sampling the melons and peppers are all free!
