Mayor Larry O’Brien, Councillor Maria McRae, Chair of the Transportation Committee, Barrhaven Councillor Jan Harder and Gloucester-South Nepean Councillor Steve Desroches in partnership with Tim Hortons helped to kick off the fifth annual Fall Cleaning the Capital Campaign today in Barrhaven.
“Ottawa’s 5th annual Fall Cleaning the Capital campaign would not be possible without the participation of thousands of dedicated volunteers who care about keeping our city clean,” said Mayor O’Brien. “As we have seen here today, the annual Barrhaven cleanup is a wonderful example of residents joining together to make a real difference in their community."
Representatives from local community groups and neighbourhood volunteers participated in the launch of this year’s fall campaign that runs from September 15 to October 15. The annual Cleaning the Capital campaign is completed in partnership with Tim Hortons, and numerous other media and business sponsors who donate prizes and cleanup supplies.
“We set a record in 2009, with the spring and fall campaigns having a combined total of 87,409 participants in 1,438 projects. More than 150,000 kilograms of litter was collected that year, bringing the grand total to more than one million kilograms of collected litter since the campaign’s beginnings in 1994. We are hoping to continue the trend with another record-breaking campaign this fall,” said Councillor McRae. “I encourage everyone to register a clean-up project and help keep Ottawa clean, green, litter-free and graffiti-free.”
"I am very pleased to report that the 7th annual Barrhaven Spring cleanup collected 1,000 bags of litter which amounts to 3,240 kg," said Councillor Harder. "I would like to thank our volunteers and businesses who do such great work in maintaining our communities. I am extending a friendly challenge this fall to the residents in Ward 3 to continue this cleanup trend and try to win the 2010 Fall Ward Award for the city ward with the highest participation ratio in cleanup projects citywide." The wards with the highest participation ratio in 2009 were Kanata North and Stittsville-Kanata West.
Mayor O’Brien and Councillors McRae, Harder and Desroches presented a certificate of appreciation to representatives of the Barrhaven community group for their outstanding cleanup efforts in the community.
Councillor Steve Desroches thanked residents from Ward 22 for their contribution to a clean and green Barrhaven. “There are many benefits to participating in the Cleaning the Capital Campaign,” said Councillor Desroches, “including community pride, a healthy environment and an active lifestyle.”
“Tim Hortons is proud to be a long-time contributor to the Cleaning the Capital campaigns and we are committed to supporting local initiatives to keep our communities beautiful,” said Tim Hortons store owner Bill Houldsworth. “Fall Cleaning the Capital is a great opportunity to partner with our customers and neighbours to combat litter and graffiti through community cleanup projects across the city.”
There is still time to get involved. Volunteers who register their cleanup projects are eligible to win prizes donated by campaign sponsors. Prizes include Tim Hortons coffee brewers, hotel getaways, tickets to local sporting events and restaurant gift certificates. Registration continues until October 15.
