As pick-your-own berry farms open this week—earlier than usual— Savour Ottawa is encouraging locals and visitors alike to make local products a part of their summer menus. Savour Ottawa members such as the 42 Crichton Street Fine Foods and ZenKitchen, for example, are including local berries in everything from their pies to their sangrias.
Whether you want to pick your own or enjoy them on a gourmet plate with other delicacies, it’s the perfect time to reinvigorate your love of sumptuous berries at Savour Ottawa farms such as Ovens Berry Farm, Ferme Proulx Farm, Rochon’s Berry Farm and Bleutière Hector Dignard & Fils. For more local berry farms throughout the region, visit www.savourottawa.ca.
No one appreciates beautiful spring and summer weather more than people in the Ottawa area, so as we plan our barbecues, beach parties, cottage weekends and Canada Day parties, consider incorporating local meats, fruits, vegetables and more into the celebration!
Local and hormone-free beef from Flood Road Farm, Hawk Hill Farm, RGK Polled Herefords, Shima’s Farm and other local beef producers will elevate your burgers or steaks to a whole other level! If you’d prefer to let others grill it to perfection for you, Savour Ottawa members such as The Red Apron are always pleased to help, serving tasty, local beef in their Sheppard’s Pie, Beef Bourguignon and other fine local beef inspired meals.
If there’s anything that French cooking has taught us, it’s that cheese and eggs work beautifully in harmony together. Long summer mornings and lazy afternoons are the perfect time to indulge in the easy delicacy of local cheeses and eggs. For a taste of local Bekings Eggs, visit Restaurant Eighteen, Beckta Dining + Wine, and the Crowne Plaza hotel’s Café 101. Bekings Eggs are perfect for omelets, sandwiches with spicy arugula or a flavourful quiche.
Enjoying the region’s beautiful cheeses from Canreg Station Farm and Pasture Dairy, Glengarry Fine Cheese and La fromagerie les folies bergères is a sophisticated and palate-pleasing way to indulge yourself and support your local producers.
The Savour Ottawa initiative is spearheaded by Ottawa Tourism, the City of Ottawa (Markets Management, Rural Affairs) and Just Food. A volunteer Advisory Committee comprised of farmers, chefs and industry representatives meets regularly.
Savour Ottawa works to develop and promote Ottawa and area as a premier, year-round culinary destination, with robust offerings of local foods and experiences for both locals and visitors to the area. www.savourottawa.ca
