City Hall will be a flurry of activity over the next five weeks as local landscape artist Jennifer Stead works from her temporary studio inside the City Hall Art Gallery. The exhibit A Long Drawn Out Story opened last Thursday with 125 feet of blank white paper wrapped around the gallery walls. By the time the exhibit closes on May 2, Stead will have converted all 125 feet into a charcoal landscape drawing.
Stead says her inspiration for long drawings comes from metaphorical and historical walled gardens. "I initially wanted to be surrounded and immersed by my art, enveloped simultaneously in the real space of the gallery and an imaginary landscape."
The public is welcome to come and watch the drawing progress or view the completed drawing during the final week. Stead will talk to the public about her work Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m.
A resident of Ottawa, Jennifer Stead has been painting landscapes for 20 years. She received her BFA at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax and was a resident at the Banff Centre for the Arts. She has an Arts Education degree from McGill University and an MFA from the University of Calgary. Her work is represented in various private, public and corporate collections nationally and she has been the recipient of many provincial and federal arts grants.
