More than 300,000 people have died in Darfur, and 3 million more have been displaced, leaving what the United Nations considers “the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.” A.Y. Jackson Secondary School Business teacher Cathy Belanger, says her Grade 12 International Business students hope to raise awareness and resources for displaced Darfuri children and their families. The students have planned a showcase event they have entitled Mission Possible: Darfur. All proceeds will be going to field projects in Darfur via the UN Refugee agency (UNHCR).
Ms. Belanger says the students have essentially developed a run of play organizational plan, similar to what professional fundraisers use. They have booked the restaurant, created a marketing plan that includes promoting the event, and asked local businesses for donations that will be used for a silent auction. She added that they have been working diligently to ensure the event is a success. Ms. Belanger said, “It is very empowering for students to realize young people can and do get things done in their local and global communities.”
Mission Possible: Darfur is taking place on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Lone Star Restaurant, 4048 Carling Avenue in Kanata. It is anticipated that 60 to 80 guests will attend. The dinner runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will include guest speaker Alew Damiano Bwolo. He is from Sudan and now works with the Catholic Immigration Centre helping newly arrived immigrants. Other special guests already confirmed are City Councillor Peggy Feltmate, business leaders, parents, and other community members.
The students are doing this as part of a global leadership project. Ms. Belanger said they had to select an issue and decide the best way to create awareness and inform people how to help.
Tickets are $25 in advance and can be purchased by calling the school at 613-836-2527 or email with contact information at missionpossibledarfur@gmail.com
Cash and cheques can be made payable to A.Y. Jackson Secondary School.
