The widening of Hazeldean Road is underway thanks to funding from the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Ottawa. The Honourable Gordon O’Connor, Chief Government Whip and Member of Parliament for Carleton-Mississippi Mills; Yasir Naqvi, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa Centre; His Worship Larry O’Brien, Mayor of Ottawa; Councillor Maria McRae, Chair of the Transportation Committee and Ward Councillor Shad Qadri today officially broke ground on the $65-million Infrastructure Stimulus Fund project. “Hazeldean Road provides a direct link to downtown routes that I know many of my constituents use for their daily commute,” said Minister O’Connor. “I’m pleased that Canada’s Economic Action Plan is delivering necessary upgrades to Hazeldean Road that will improve the safety and traffic flow on this main artery route.” “The Province of Ontario is proud to support growth in Ottawa,” said Yasir Naqvi, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa Centre. “Through this and other important investments, we continue to be a partner in the upgrading and expansion of essential infrastructure throughout the region.” “This significant investment will transform Hazeldean Road into a major urban transportation link between Stittsville and Kanata and is exactly the kind of infrastructure a growing city like Ottawa needs,” said Larry O’Brien, Mayor of Ottawa. “I’d like to thank Stittsville-Kanata West Ward Councillor Shad Qadri for his hard work and dedication to getting this project underway.” Highlights of the project include: Phase 1: from Terry Fox Drive to 100 metres west of Iber Road Phase 2: from 100 metres east of Carp Road to 100 metres west of Iber Road When it is completed in 2011, this development, which is cost-shared equally by all three levels of government, will respond to the significant growth in population and demand for improved transportation infrastructure in the city’s western region. On June 5, 2009, the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Ottawa announced $375 million in stimulus funding for infrastructure projects across the City of Ottawa.
