Tabaret Hall at the University of Ottawa
Photo by Dwayne Brown / Dwayne
Brown Studio
Tabaret Hall was designed as a model of the US Capitol building, with
a high dome and porticos on side wings. It has a symmetrical facade
and plan, continued for all wings except most recent. The modern dome
(shown above) replaced an earlier nondecript lantern. (Source: David

August 28: Graffiti isn't all bad.
There are lots of examples in Ottawa of impromptu works of art that
put soul into concrete, and decorate construction sites. Here's a sampling
of some of the current "urban art" in Ottawa.
We want to know: What do you think about this type
of graffiti? Where are Ottawa's best pieces of urban art? Let us know

Bank Street - across from Lansdowne Park.
John, the artist who created this mural, writes: "Mary
Pal of the Glebe Center retirement home gave me an opportunity to rekindle
my passion for paint. I just wish there were more spots in Ottawa where
artists could display their works and eradicate some of the stereotypes
that we artists are often pigeon-holed into. There's not much uglier
than a bare grey wall and I think society now realizes that graffiti
does not equal gang activity, so why not throw a little colour on these
drab walls?" Read more...
