Let's get this right out of the way. The Mudmen are a rock band with bagpipes. That's right a rock band with bagpipes. And drums. And guitars. And a bass. And a singer. This is not novelty, it's reality.

On their self-titled 2001 debut the Mudmen made quite an impression on the Canadian music scene. Winning over rockers, punks, metalheads and Celtic warriors from coast to coast by touring relentlessly on the strength of their hit single and video "Saturday". Other tracks from the album such as "Drink & Fight", "5 O'clock" and "In My Head" soon solidified the band's reputation both on air and on stage.

+ RED WOOD CENTRAL

Thursday, October 9 (Doors 8pm)

ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX, 27 York Street, Ottawa, Canada.
Age 19+/ General Admission
Tickets: $10 only at the door

As long as music fans continue to yearn for the acerbic wit of Randy Newman, the innovative stylings of Bjork and Liz Phair, and the intricate arrangements of Elvis Costello, Erin's latest and third full-length record, "Grand" will prove necessity in any music lover's collection.

Erin originally hails from Fredricksburg, Virginia. She started playing piano at the late age of three and has since adapted smartly to a slew of other instruments including bass, drums, and most of all, guitar. So, writing songs seemed the natural progression.
Playing her songs in front of people soon became an obsession with Erin, as well as her strongest suit. She has built a substantial fan base in the true troubadour fashion of touring and has sold nearly 30,000 copies of her full-length debut, Distillation, both in stores and from the stage. She snagged top honors in the Providence Phoenix's music poll for "Best Folk Artist" of 2000, not to mention a Boston Music Award nomination for outstanding new singer/songwriter.

Todd Mattila-Hartman unveils crime prevention policy
Todd Mattila-Hartman, candidate for the seat of River Ward Councillor in the fall municipal election, unveiled today his policy to reduce crime in River Ward.

This policy will address two levels of crime prevention. The first measure is a pre-emptive approach seeing the development and expansion of community-based programs creating activities for youth to participate in, and facilities where they can meet with friends in a safe and supervised environment. The creation of similar centres in other areas of the city has created a drop in crime upwards of 65%. The second measure will use the more traditional approach of directing additional resources to front line policing, placing additional officers on the street to directly address problems.

"Ottawa grows larger as each day passes" said Todd, "and while this brings prosperity and great opportunity to the city, unfortunately it has also seen increases in crime. Youth centres have proven to reduce smaller crimes such as mischief and vandalism, making it possible for the police to focus on the more serious problems in the community."

If elected, Todd will make improved safety of our homes, streets, and communities a priority.

For more information on Todd's crime policy or campaign contact him by phone at (613) 799 6771, or by email at Todd@VoteTodd.ca.

Todd Mattila-Hartman registered to run for the position of River Ward City Councillor on March 12, 2003. The 27 year old small business owner has lived in Ottawa his entire life and has always had a strong interest in municipal politics and urban planning. During the campaign he will be discussing issues that affect our communities such as parks and recreation, urban development, transit and transportation, and safety. He will also be discussing ways to streamline city government to help us through these difficult financial times. Information about Todd is available online at www.VoteTodd.ca.

OPP advises:"Summer is over - be patient - be prepared this Labour Day weekend!"
The Ontario Provincial Police reminds
motorists that the Labour Day weekend is typically one of the busiest long
weekends of the year. With students heading back to school, there are many
special events planned across the province, and cottagers will be making end
of season trips.
Tragically, the last long weekend of summer often claims the record for
the most lives lost. Last year, eight people died in motor vehicle collisions
on Ontario's highways.
The OPP urges drivers to take extra time when behind the wheel and be
sure that seatbelt and child restraints are used by everyone in the vehicle.
Seatbelts and child restraints prevent serious injuries and death! It will be
a busy weekend on the roads, so expect delays and be prepared. That means
focusing your attention on driving, expecting changes in weather and putting
safety first. When you have reached your destination, keep safety in mind
while on the water by wearing your PFD's.
Throughout the weekend, thanks to the OPP's partnership with McDonald's
Ontario, the OPP will be distributing Buy One Get One Big Mac(R) coupons to
selected drivers stopped through the OPP's RIDE program. Traffic Sergeant
Chris Whaley states "We all must do our part to make our highways & waterways
safe this Labour Day long weekend.
The OPP wants all travelers to get to and from their destinations safely.
I hope everyone enjoys the last holiday weekend of the summer and starts the
school year safe and sound. By working together, we can all make Ontario's
roads & waterways safer."

LECTURE 1: GARDENS OF NORTHERN ENGLAND
The defensive nature of the architecture of North Yorkshire and Northumberland bears witness to the border wars between England and Scotland. Perched above the River Swale, Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire acquired a contemporary garden by Neil Swanson in 2000. The juxtaposition of ancient and modern is a characteristic of the northern renaissance. Within sight of the wind towers of Whitley Bay is Seaton Delaval Hall, a late masterpiece by Sir John Vanbrugh. Twice gutted by fire, and left roofless for fifty years, it was partially restored in 1950 by the Lord Hastings. The 20th century formal gardens, designed by James Russell, form an exquisite setting for this grandiose ruin. Cragside House has a precipitous rock and heather garden overlooking the Debdon valley. As part of the economic revitalisation of the north, the young Duchess of Northumberland commissioned Jacques and Peter Wirtz to create a great cascade and water basin on the scale of Versailles - the design to be uncompromisingly modern and using electronic technology. The great water garden at Alnwick opened to the public in 2002 and symbolizes the energy of the revitalised north. Finally, the mystical associations of the tidal flats at Holy Island attract pilgrims following in the steps of Saint Aidan, who founded Lindisfarne Priory in 635 AD.

Monday November 10 2003 at 7 pm
LECTURE 2: TURQUOISE WATERS AND CORAL REEFS
One of the last British colonies, settled in the early 17th century, Bermuda by virtue of its isolated mid-Atlantic position exists in a time warp. Privileged, prosperous and racially integrated, this curving archipelago of seven linked islands is proud of its British heritage. The Naval Dockyard has been restored as a maritime museum, showing off its distinctive classical stone architecture. Vernacular architecture is also suited to the climate; stepped roofs of coral blocks capture rainwater on an island with no lakes or rivers. Gracious colonial houses, like Verdmont, with its elegantly furnished interior and verdant garden, give us an accurate idea of a sophisticated British-colonial culture. But it is the gardens of Bermuda which are its greatest treasure; from the magnificence of the Bermuda Botanical Gardens to the small English gardens of Saint George's, the first colonial capital. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, oleander and morning glory bloom in colourful profusion. In private gardens orchid, bird-of-paradise and frangipani perfume the air.

Monday November 17 2003 at 7 pm
LECTURE 3: BITTER LEMONS
From prehistoric to modern times, the small Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been batted like a shuttlecock from invader to conqueror (Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, British, Greek and Turkish). Divided in two in 1974, the north became predominantly Turkish and the south became Greek. Unrecognized by the international community, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus remains mercifully under-exploited both archaeologically and culturally. At Vrysi there are traces of a Neolithic settlement. The Pigádhes Sanctuary is a Bronze Age shrine. The Phoenician palace of Vouni burnt to the ground in 380 BC. Wild flowers bloom among the ruins of ancient Salamis, a major trade centre from the 11th century BC until the harbour silted up during Byzantine times. The remote Kárpas peninsula presents a pre-industrial landscape where shepherds graze their flocks near early Christian churches. Above Kryenia are the ruins of the crusader abbey of Béllapais, a village made famous by the presence of writer Lawrence Durrell who lived here from 1953 to 1956. Finally, the city of Famagusta, with its Venetian walls and cathedral-mosque symbolises the cultural complexity of this mythological island.

Monday November 24 2003 at 7 pm
LECTURE 4: LATE OTTOMAN OPULENCE
In the 19th century, Istanbul was transformed architecturally by two reformist sultans, the brothers Abdül Mecit I (1839-1861) and Abdül Aziz (1861-1876). Under the autocratic sultan Abdül Hamit II (1876-1909), the Ottoman Empire became economically dependent on Kaiser Wilhelm II and German expansionist policies. Yet a string of palaces and summer pavilions set in exquisite gardens were built in Istanbul during the late 19th century. A dynasty of imperial architects, the Balyan family, designed and executed the Beylerbeyi Palace, the Küçüksu Palace, and the Pavilion of the Linden Tree in addition to the well known Dolmabahce Palace. At the beginning of the 20th century a brilliant Italian architect Raimondo D'Aronco gave Istanbul a selection of exquisite Art Nouveau buildings-from the Seyh Zafir Complex to the Imperial Porcelain Factory. The German architects Otto Ritter and Helmuth Cuno designed the exterior and the interior of the Haydarpasa Railway Station, which includes stained glass, Art Nouveau furniture and a rose garden. The last hereditary khedive of Egypt commissioned a palace for his mother from Delfo Seminati, another Italian. Set in formal gardens (now a public park) guests ascend in a bronze art nouveau elevator to a tower with a sweeping view up and down the Bosphorus.

JENNIFER DICKSON: BIOGRAPHY
For more than twenty years, Jennifer Dickson has been a passionate nationalist and an outspoken defender of the rights of Canadian Artists. The only Canadian member in the history of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, England, she was named to the Order of Canada in 1995. In 1988, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Alberta, Edmonton, for her contribution to Canadian culture.
Jennifer Dickson is a nationally recognized artist. Her photographic exhibition, The Last Silence, curated by the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, toured 15 venues in Canada and Italy for 6 years. Since then, her insatiable curiosity has led her to Turkey, initially in pursuit of the Roman emperor Hadrian and his lover Antinous, subsequently to Seljuk, Ottoman and Armenian cultural sites.
As a teacher, Jennifer Dickson has served on the faculties of the Saidye Bronfman Centre, Montreal, Concordia University, Queen's University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Alberta, Edmonton. As a participant in the Canada Council's Visiting Artist program, she has conducted lectures and workshops on numerous occasions in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, northern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Her images have been used on the covers of fourteen books by Canadian authors.

Second Ottawa resident diagnosed with possible West Nile virus
A second Ottawa resident has been diagnosed with a possible case of
West Nile virus. The elderly man is suspected of having contracted the virus
locally since he has only travelled in the Ottawa-Gatineau area recently.

The man is being treated for meningitis-like symptoms at a local hospital
and is resting comfortably. Preliminary tests indicate possible West Nile
virus. Tests to confirm WNv are being run, but conclusive results are not
expected for several weeks.

The latest case is the second local resident to be diagnosed as possibly
having the virus. The first person is also an elderly male and he remains in
hospital where he has been treated for the past three weeks. The two men
live in different parts of the City.

"We have moved more adult mosquito traps into the area where this gentleman
lived," said Associate Medical Officer of Health Patricia Huston, "and we
will be testing to see if they are carrying the West Nile virus."

The City of Ottawa has mounted an aggressive campaign against the WNv this
year. Larvicide has been applied in the sewer system twice this summer and
also in selected ditches and open bodies of water. This helps to control the
number of mosquitoes that are most likely to carry the virus. The local
mosquito population and the number of crow deaths are being monitored
regularly. So far, nine local crows have tested positive for the West Nile
virus while only one positive mosquito pool has been detected out of the 538
local pools tested.

There have been seven confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Canada so
far this year and another 42 probable cases according to Health Canada. This
includes one confirmed case in southern Ontario and five confirmed cases in
Saskatchewan.

Dr. Huston encourages everyone to take precautions against being bitten by
mosquitoes since the WNv is transmitted through mosquito bites. People
should apply an insect repellent containing DEET to exposed skin and on
their clothes when outside. Long sleeves and light-coloured clothes are
advisable especially when mosquitoes are most active like at sunrise, in the
early evening and at night. Screens on doors and windows should be checked
to make sure there aren't any holes through which mosquitoes could slip.

Soft Canyon & The Unicorns bring jubliant rock psychedelia to Zaphod Beeblebrox

"Members of scorching psychedelic rockers Tricky Woo now deliver a more mature sound, one that ranges from
Southern boogie to jaunty pop-psych." - NXNE.

"The band takes cues from across the music spectrum, but unlike many of the rock bands to achieve success
recently they shape their sound into something fresh and personal. Soft Canyon borrows heavily from the
Laurel Canyon sound that spawned the likes of producer, arranger and musician Jack Nietzsche as well as
absurdist popster Van Dyke Parks, not to mention the great influence it had on Arthur Lee's Love and
former Canadian Neil Young. This is most evident on the anthem-style track 'Hope's Great Divide,' a track that
is extremely catchy and chock-full of studio trickery that will have the listener thinking it must be one of those
lost gems from the 70s. Soft Canyon layers the sound of two or three guitars and keyboards with incredible depth
in the vocal department and a drum sound that recalls the studio wizardry of Phil Spector. The band also blends
heavy influences of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother era with early Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers, but without
falling into the trap of ripping off or rehashing the same old sounds. In this respect they are comparable to Royal Trux
or Acid Mothers Temple in the sense that they are paying homage to their influences but still changing the face of rock
at the same time." - FORCEDEXPOSURE.com

"Soft Canyon's sound, which they qualify under the "goodtimes" heading, owes a debt to the top-shelf jangle-pop of
Badfinger, the early (meaning reasonable) days of prog rock and the gentle, mildly-baked roots-rock Gram Parsons'
once called "cosmic American music."" - MONTREAL MIRROR.

Not merely a rock and roll band, Soft Canyon are a spiritual force whose selfless approach towards musical nirvana is uncompromised. Delivering the good times, while tugging at your heart strings with a confidence and joy rarely found in today's cookie-cutter music. It is hardly surprising that this newly born band is already generating an appreciative fan base.

Formed by Andrew Dickson shortly after he retired his seminal rock and roll explosion Tricky Woo, Soft Canyon boast a treasure trove of Montreal's finest rock musicians. With their first release presently charting at #4 on the National Campus Charts, and a jubilant live show, Soft Canyon are here to bring you the music of salvation.

Demolition Doll Rods pow your wow at Zaphod Beeblebrox
ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX, STEAM WHISTLE & JAGERMEISTER
PRESENT...

From Detroit
In The Red/ Matador Recording Artists
The Legendary...
DEMOLITION DOLL RODS

+ Guests t.b.a.
(Suggestions welcome. Email zaphods_ottawa@hotmail.com)

Thursday, September 25 (Doors 8pm)

ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX, 27 York Street, Ottawa, Canada.
Age 19+/ General Admission
Tickets: $10 only at the door

The Demolition Doll Rods are children of God who were sent to this
planet to inspire the creative forces that lie at the heart and soul of
each and every living creature.

Through the forces of the powers that be, Danny, Christine and Margaret
Doll Rod venture far and wide. Through (or by) the grace of God they
will Rock, they will Roll, they will out of control every heart and soul
that be.

As they get around they will strip you down, pow your wow, challenge you
to live right here and right now. Each and every nation shall experience
this sensation.

If you can, you will and they do. There is no means of Transportation
that will get you like the Demolition Doll Rods. They will drive you
out of your mind and into your soul.

They are here to let you know who you are is what you be and to each us
all is everything.

God Bless and Rock On!

"The trio perform near-naked, save for the occasional pasty, hubcap, dog biscuit, Fudgesicle, or whatever else they
can get to stick to their genitals. But don't mistake their exhibitionism for mere shock-rock novelty; the band's
rockabilly-flavored garage-punk sound lends weight to their super sexed white-trash antics". - SPIN.

"Somewhere in between the Cramps, the Donnas, Jon Spencer and Royal Trux, this wonderfully bold Detroit trio
dishes out a somewhat sparse but totally convincing brand of sexy soulful rock n' roll, often while naked. Although
pretty trashy in sight and sound, the Demolition Doll Rods ultimately won me over with rough-hewn sing-along
choruses about their take on love, sex, rock stardom, and just about everything else. And when Margaret calls out
"I just wanna get married for the weekend!" on my favorite track, I can't help but give my blessings" - Skyway.

The Doll Rods are a one-band movement, a high-colonic lifestyle, an R'n'B T&A circus garnering legions of new fans wherever they go. They do happen to make a few people pretty fucking uncomfortable just by being so damn comfortable with themselves, but if that's the case, just relax and let them wildly diddle your not-so secret spot. If you wanna shakeyour ass, well, just come on...

The Doll Rods are:
Cristine (drums) - sex bomb metrnome who lives in a sound world all her own.
Margaret (vocals, guitar) singer/songwriter/ringleader. She literally bends over backwards for your pleasure.
Danny (guitar, vocals) - school of hard licks graduate (formerly in the Gories). What little clothes he wears indicates he's in drag. And baby, if you can't hang with that, you can just go home.

Secret origins:
Sisters Margaret and Cristine were caught dirty dancing to soul sisters Martha Whitney and Sugar Pie DeSanto and shipped off to catholic school. It was there that they met soulmate Danny, busy sinning to the Ramones and the Runaways. And one velvet morning, run away is what they did, in order to realize their dreams of rocking in an "all-girl" kind of way.

Perma-tour:
The Doll Rods enjoy a legendary reputation amongst this nation's Teamsters, who collect and trade stories and videotapes of the band's nearly nude truckstop yoga sessions. Sure, these love-making problem children have toiled in the basement like all the rest, but make no mistake, they're a well-lubed touring machine who've come into their sound through tens of thousands of miles of good old fashioned road work. They've whipped audiences into a frenzied state on their tours with Iggy Pop, Blues Explosion, Boss Hog, Guitar Wolf and Quintron.

The Ottawa Senators and the Corel Centre announced today the introduction of CapitalTickets.ca
The Ottawa Senators and the Corel Centre announced today the introduction of CapitalTickets.ca as the exclusive provider of tickets for all Senators games and Corel Centre events.

"CapitalTickets.ca is a logical business progression for the Senators and Corel Centre as we continue to look for ways to make our fans' experience at our events a memorable one," said Mr. Melnyk. "Ticket sales is one of, if not the most important revenue source for NHL teams. CapitalTickets.ca gives us the ability to better service our fans and be more responsive to their needs."

CapitalTickets.ca will allow the Senators and Corel Centre to have direct and exclusive involvement in ticket sales and strategic branding, while providing new revenue sources to both organizations. The Senators are the first NHL club to take ticketing "in-house".

For hockey fans and entertainment event patrons, this new partnership provides enhanced services by allowing them to purchase, receive, transfer and manage their tickets directly from the CapitalTickets.ca website. In addition to the comprehensive Internet services, fans will be able to purchase tickets for the first time through a toll-free number, 1-877-788-FANS (3267).

All fans visiting CapitalTickets.ca until Sept. 30 can enter for a chance to win a "VIP All Access Pass". Through this promotion, one lucky fan will win a prize package that includes two (2) tickets to all events at the Corel Centre for the next year, including season tickets for the Ottawa Senators.

CapitalTickets.ca has partnered with Paciolan (www.paciolan.com), a ticketing solutions provider that allows venues to sell their own tickets.

Here are five unique and exciting international jazz events that you should mark in your calendar and plan to attend:

1] On Monday October 6, AVAILABLE JELLY will be at the NAC Fourth Stage. Led by Michael Moore on alto sax and clarinet, the band is made up of Wolter Wierbos, trombone, Eric Boeren, trumpet, Tobias Delius, tenor sax, Ernst Glerum, bass and Michael Vatcher on drums. Four of the six appeared here with the ICP Orchestra in April. Expect the unexpected.

2] On Saturday October 18, U. S. pianist MARILYN CRISPELL, described by the All Music Guide as "One of the finest modern jazz pianists" will be JOHN GEGGIE'S guest in his series at the NAC Fourth Stage.

3] On Monday October 27, veteran Dutch clarinetist and saxophonist AB BAARS will bring his trio to the Mercury Lounge in Ottawa as part of their extensive fall tour of North America. The trio, featuring bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Martin van Duynhoven, is one of the leading bands on the vital improvised music scene in Holland.

4] On Monday November 10, the group AROS will appear at the NAC Fourth Stage. This international group is made up of Canadians Rob Armus, saxophone and John Korsrud, trumpet, Dutch violinist Oene van Geel, Austrian Marion von Tilzer, piano, Dutch bassist Ernst Glerum and Scottish Alan Gunga Purves, percussion. Since settling in Amsterdam in 1992, Armus has collaborated with many musicians including Han Bennink, Tristan Honsinger and Walter Wierbos.

5] On Monday December 15, the trio of pianist MICHIEL BRAAM, bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Michael Vatcher will perform at the NAC Fourth Stage. The All Music Guide says of Braam "In Holland he is a major figure who leads an outstanding band; and he is an original jazz pianist, too. He infuses his group writing with an Ellingtonian aura that absorbs a large slice of 20th century popular music, from Sousa marches to swing to the most modern free and avant-garde elements". Michael Vatcher has also appeared in Ottawa with Available Jelly [October 6] and Wilbert de Joode is a member of the Ab Baars Trio [October 27].

Biographical information on Eugene Melnyk

Eugene Melnyk
Owner, governor and chairman
Born May 27, 1959 (Toronto, Ontario)

Eugene Melnyk assumed the role of sole owner, governor and chairman of the
Ottawa Senators Hockey Club on August 25, 2003.

Melnyk is chairman and chief executive officer of Biovail Corporation, a
company he founded in 1989. Biovail is an international, full-service
pharmaceutical company that focuses on researching and developing some of
the most advanced drug delivery technologies in the world. It currently
markets more than 20 products in North America and several products in 55
other countries, both directly and through strategic marketing partnerships.
Biovail maintains an active drug development pipeline and its proprietary
technology platforms are currently being applied to more than 30 promising
drug therapies.

As chairman and chief executive officer, Melnyk has led Biovail through
exceptional revenue growth from $19 million (US) in 1995 to $788 million
(US) in 2002. Biovail employs more than 1,850 people world-wide and is
publicly traded on both the New York and Toronto stock exchanges.

Prior to forming Biovail, Melnyk created a medical publishing company called
Trimel Corporation that he founded in 1982 and later sold to Thomson
Corporation in 1989.

Apart from his strong desire to succeed in business, Melnyk is also a
passionate sports fan. He is the sole owner of the Ontario Hockey League's

stability to the organization by helping make it one of the top teams in the
OHL.

one of the top thoroughbred racing stables in North America. The stable is
home to more than 370 thoroughbred horses and has included such notable
legends as Archers Bay (winner of the 1998 Queen's Plate) and other Graded
Stakes winners such as Graeme Hall, Tweedside, Harmony Lodge and Strong

THE SNITCHES tell all at Zaphod Beeblebrox
ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX, STEAM WHISTLE & JAGERMEISTER
PRESENT...

From Montreal
Universal Music Recording Artists
THE SNITCHES

+ guest t.b.a.
(suggestions welcome--email: zaphods_ottawaAThotmailDOTcom))

Thursday, September 11 (Doors 8pm)

ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX, 27 York Street, Ottawa, Canada.
Age 19+/ General Admission
Tickets: $8 only at the door

"More clang. More Clash (but like Strummer getting goosed). More Elvis Costello,
with the odd flicker of
the likes of Tom Waits." - NOW Toronto.

"The Snitches lean towards the power side of things, often reminding me of
decade-old acts like Hypnolovewheel,
Material Issue, and The Flamin' Groovies. This is a good thing. With a penchant
for a sticky, catchy shoutalong
chorus the band whizzes by at a breakneck rate, often sounding like another band
but coming up with a surprise.
But whatever other band they may sound like, The Snitches definitely have am
energetic and clever character of their own"
- INK 19.com.

Notorious for their deliriously frenetic live shows, the Snitches emerged from
Montreal's after hours speakeasy scene to quickly become one of the city's most
celebrated and critically-acclaimed acts. From sharing the stage with the likes
of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Queens of the Stone Age and The Mekons, to
headlining in their own right, the Snitches have unleashed
their brand of explosive pandemonium in sold-out venues across Canada. Eight
years on, they continue with the buoyant and invigorating Star Witness.

Their debut CD, A Day at the A, hit the Top10 charts on numerous radio stations
across Canada as well as being voted amongst the ten best albums of the year by
Montreal's Gazette, Hour, Mirror and Voir. The attention also saw the Snitches
garner three trophies at Montreal's 1996 Independent Music Awards: Best Album,
Best Pop Artist and Best Cover Art.

They followed with Sleepwalker, which saw the band expand their musical and
emotional terrain to include a darker and more intimate atmosphere alongside
their always-heady anthems of carousal. The Snitches also provided songs for
Robert Frappier's 1996 film, "Cosmos", which garnered a Special Jury Prize at
the Cannes Film Festival.

Along with the successes, were upheavals. With personnel changes came a
revitalised line-up that has cemented the band and their purpose: to create
highly flammable rock. They have stayed true to their musical ideals and are
poised to reap the rewards of going from cult heroes to being recognized by a
broader spectrum, given today's appetites for no-nonsense, raw and intelligent
tunes. The Snitches know that, when you're right, it gets noticed.

Star Witness reflects the band's sharply-honed stylistic focus. Combining bright
sensibilities, catchy hooks and muscular drive, this new set of songs is a mix
of raucous, lyrical pop in a style that the Snitches define as their own.

GROOVELILY attract petal pushers to Zaphod Beeblebrox
EUGENE HASLAM PRESENTS...

In celebration of Steve Beckta & Maureen Cunningham's marriage

From New York
(Performed at the 2002 Ottawa Folk Festival)
GROOVELILY

Sunday, September 7 (Doors 8pm)

ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX, 27 York Street, Ottawa, Canada.
Age 19+/ General Admission
Tickets: $10 only at the door

"New York's GrooveLily cut loose in a set of urban bluegrass, spiritually
uplifting ballads and various poperatic
arias that showed off singer and violinist ValerieVigoda's angelic voice." -
Denis Armstrong, The Ottawa Sun.

"Look, up on the stage. It's a jazz band. It's a power pop trio. It's a
performance art ensemble. No, it's
GrooveLily, which is all those things and a whole lot more." - Michael Miller,
The State (Columbia, SC).

"While Vigoda's soprano and songcraft occasionally suggest the influence of
Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell and
other folk-pop sirens, her band has developed a distinctly vibrant sound." -
Mike Joyce, The Washington Post.

GrooveLily plays smart pop, with a contagiously effervescent sound that combines
a sharp wit with intelligent original songwriting. Unabashedly combining
elements of rock, jazz, folk and popular music, their vocal harmonies weave
through a lush musical
landscape textured with keyboards, drums and the blazing electric violin of lead
singer Valerie Vigoda.

Valerie Vigoda, electric violinist and singer, is the founding member of
GrooveLily. Originally from McLean, VA, she has toured the world with Cyndi
Lauper, Cher, Tina Turner and Joe Jackson, and is thrilled to be back with
GrooveLily as they take the country by storm. Valerie is a classically-trained
musician, former army lieutenant, and an honors graduate of Princeton
University. She founded GrooveLily (originally "The Valerie Vigoda Band") in
1994, with a critically acclaimed CD called "Inhabit My Heart." Dirty Linen
Magazine wrote: "to call Valerie Vigoda talented barely seems to do her justice.
She has a great voice, is an intelligent lyricist...and an ace violinist.
Methinks we'll hear more of her."

Brendan Milburn plays keyboards, sings and writes all GrooveLily's material
along with Valerie. His two-fisted, rhythmic piano playing is reminiscent of
early Billy Joel, or more recently, Ben Folds Five. Before joining GrooveLily,
he graduated from Pomona College and NYU's MFA program in Musical Theatre
Writing, and played with both Ben Harper and Clarence Clemons. He often yearns
for his native San Francisco.

Gene Lewin plays the drums, and hails from Princeton, NJ. His eclectic, joyful
work on the drum kit has been favorably compared to that of Carter Beauford (of
the Dave Matthews Band). After graduating from Princeton University, Gene earned
a Master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music. He has appeared on CDs
with George Coleman, John Patitucci, and many others.

Winner of Galaxie's Rising Star Award at NXNE 2003, twenty-three-year-old singer-songwriter, guitarist and avid surfer Matt Mays steps into the limelight with the independent release of his debut solo album, aptly self-titled.

Released in November 2002, the album features 10 all-original tracks and includes guest musician Bob Egan of Wilco/Blue Rodeo fame. A recent cover feature in Halifax's The Coast (January 2003) describes it as a "sweet affair", "clearly crafted" with "catchy choruses...reminiscent of a younger, edgier Blue Rodeo, mixed with the laid back messiness of Tonight's the Night-era Neil Young." The Halifax Daily News writes ".it's one of the best debut albums to come out of the East in years."

As a former member of The Guthries, Matt toured Canada, coast to coast, and Great Britain. His songwriting ability grabbed the attention of Country Music Television (CMT), whose production team traveled to Nova Scotia in summer 2002 to film a half hour music spotlight on The Guthries, and to make a video for Matt's song Season to Leave, later put into rotation on CMT. This song was also chosen by the British music magazine UNCUT, to be included on its compilation CD, Songs of the New West - The Best of Americana 2000, featuring music by Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons.

Since the quiet release of his solo album, he pieced together the four-piece El Torpedo. This crowd-pleasing, charismatic alt country-rock band features Jarrett Murphy on guitar; Brad Conrad on organ and pedal steel; Tim Baker on drums, and Andy Patil on bass. "Matt Mays and El Torpedo combine solid playing with dense narratives and Matt's sad/bad boy singing style. He conjures up a young Tom Petty", writes Exclaim.

Delighting both long-time and new-found fans, Matt Mays and El Torpedo have been performing over recent months with such artists as Sam Roberts, Billy Bragg, The Skydiggers, Nathan Wiley, Kathleen Edwards and The Rheostatics.

Joe MacDonald (ex-RUSTBUCKET) and Jeff Kerr (ex-JIMMY GEORGE/THE WHIRLEYGIGS) share the bulk of the singing and songwriting duties for SAWDOGS, Joe on acoustic guitar and Jeff playing electric rhythm guitar. Layered guitars, harmonizing Everly Brothers/ Blue Shadows-vocals and drums blend to establish the musical setting for tales of living, loving and dying. SAWDOGS play melody-driven songs whose prettiness often disguises the darker lyrical imagery. While only together for a
short time, SAWDOGS have already played in support of such well-established Canadian artists as ASHLEY MACISAAC,
TERRI CLARK, THE CASH BROTHERS and THE SADIES.

Armed with a healthy disregard for copyright law, Remix has emerged as an organized artistic response to a principally unresponsive medium. Influenced also by the new tradition of sample- based cultural products, this project explores the idea of finding a voice while using the words of others.

Last year, Remix 2002 reworked CBC¹s The National. This year, the cultural icon in our sights is Much Music. We have commissioned 16 video artists from Ottawa and Gatineau to communicate their unique perspectives on the landscapes of our Nation¹s Music Station. Each artist has been given the same hour of music television to use as source material for the creation of a brand new video work. All the projects will be screened together as part of the Art Star Video Art Biennial, where the crowd will pick their favourite, and the Ophatest¹ will be honoured.

Part hip-hop style throw-down, part art party and part media critique, Remix captures the need for us to feedback into the media stream in a more creative way than simply changing the channel. Each of the artists involved expresses his or her experience of television and media culture. However, there is an underlying desire to slow things down, to take more time, but also to repeat and focus in on subtleties that we can miss in the single pass. When the works are played back-to-back, the diversity of expression is truly revealed.

Come join SAW Video for Remix 2003. We are sure you will never look at music videos the same way again.

Remix 2003 is the Official Party for Galerie SAW Gallery¹s Art Star Video Art Biennial.

This event has been made possible with the gracious support of SAW Video, Galerie SAW Gallery, the Available Light Screening Collective, the Independent Film Co-operative of Ottawa, Centre de production DAÏMÕN, Organised Sound and Artengine.

25 August March against Security Certificates with families and friends of the detained
**END discriminatory and anti-democratic Security Certificates!**
**JOIN with families and friends of Canadian Secret Trial Detainees!**

WHEN: Monday, August 25, 11:00 am
WHERE: Gather at Human Rights Monument, Elgin Street at Lisgar, Ottawa
WHAT: A walk and delegation to the Prime Minister's Office seeking freedom
for Canada's secret trial detainees

WHO: Friends and Families of Mahmoud Jaballah, Mohammad Mahjoub, Hassan
Almrei, Mohamed Harkat and Adil Charkaoui

WHY: The Families want the Prime Minister to investigate the issue of secret
trial detainees and, as part of his legacy, abolish the secret trial
security certificate and grant freedom to the five.

This historic gathering will bring together families and friends of all five
muslim
men collectively held 94 months in Canadian jails without charge or bail on
secret "evidence".

Shortly after 11:15 am on Monday, August 25, friends and family of five
Muslim men who have been collectively held 94 months in Canadian prisons
without charge or bail, on secret "evidence" neither they nor their lawyers
are allowed to see, will gather at the Canadian Human Rights Monument (Elgin
and Lisgar) and then proceed to the office of the Prime Minister via a walk
past Immigration and the Supreme Court. A request for the meeting was sent
in late July.

Currently held on a CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) "security
certificate" are Mohammad Mahjoub (since June, 2000), Mahmoud Jaballah (held
since Aug.
14, 2001), Hassan Almrei (Oct. 2001), Mohamed Harkat (Dec. 2002) and Adil
Charkaoui (May 2003). Most of their prison time has been in solitary
confinement.

"The security certificate is a medieval, Star Chamber-like process that
serves as execution by deportation," says group spokesperson Matthew
Behrens. "The Canadian government wants to deport these men back to
countries where they face torture and execution, all without telling them
why. This is done on the word of the scandal-plagued CSIS, whose history of
dishonesty and incompetence is well-known."

The event marks the first time that the wives and children of the imprisoned
men have met as a group. Individually, they, along with friends in the
community, have tried lobbying MPs, writing letters to Immigration Minister
Denis Coderre and Solicitor General Wayne Easter, holding vigils at CSIS,
organizing long-distance public education walks, and more in an attempt to
win freedom for their loved ones.

"If there is a 'case' against these men, all the families have asked is that
the 'evidence', if any does exist, be brought forward in open court so that
it can be answered and dealt with," says Behrens. "To force these folks to
go through the Kafka-esque process of being told there is a problem, but
that the nature of that problem cannot be discussed, is wholly unfair, and
illegal under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Universal Declaration
of Human Rights. Needless to say, it is a serious blow against the Canadian
notion of democracy.

"It's well past time to release these men to their families and communities,
and for CSIS to stop terrorizing the Muslim community and people of Arabic
and Middle Eastern heritage."

After the meeting with the PMO, the campaign is organizing a national day of
action to stop secret trials on Friday, October 31. Among the planned
activities will be a trick-or-treat action at CSIS headquarters, seeking the
sealed "evidence", if such exists, against the five men.

"THERE IS A LAND where the government can arrest non-citizens, throw them in
jail for an indefinite period of time, and then remove them from the
country, all in virtual secrecy. This is a land where, for certain people,
civil liberties and rights of due process don't exist. No, this is not China
or Cuba. This is Canada -- a country I believed understood the transcendent
importance of safeguarding civil liberties. But against those whom Ottawa
secretly determines are a threat to national security, the government can
act, and is now acting in alarming ways. Has Canada gone mad? Shades of
Guantanamo Bay -- where the U.S. has imprisoned hundreds of suspected
terrorists without trial -- colour the government and the judiciary."

Push, that's what the members of micro maureen have been doing for years. They push themselves, they push their music, they push their peers and they push their ideal of what a good song should be.

Ruben Huizenga and Christian Simpson have been working together for almost ten years and Chowder pushed his way in (by turning-up) about seven years ago. Time, tours and albums and Glueleg slipped into oblivion, new obligations and projects crept in and filled the latest years. Yet always in touch and occasionally passing on the road, the friends waxed nostalgically and talked of getting back together and starting something new and interesting.

As other obligations wound down and time made itself a little more available Ruben, Christian and Chowder decided that good friends are better then 'strange' strangers and began the process of creating a new group. With the new band came a new line-up and the decision was made that the fourth member should be a guitar player. Barry Stock filled the position nicely; excellent technical skill, touring experience and great pro gear. micro maureen was born, songs where written and demos recorded.

Through their management they found their way into an allegiance with Core/DKD and Aquarius Records. A new branch of an existing company with a forward thinking business plan and a proven history micro maureen felt there was a common ideology between the two parties and the excitement was mutual. With a record company and with the Shogun Systaz at the production helm the CD was begun.

micro maureen did all the writing, recording and finally the mixing of the CD at "Shogun Labs" and "Homework" studios (studios conveniently owned by both Byron Wong and Ruben, a partnership that had sprouted from a very strange remix). With two studios at their disposal micro maureen had a creative outlet that was unhindered by the regular restraints of time and budget.

Once the recording was completed the band managed to slip in a couple of small shows including one for their agents, record company and other interested and curious industry insiders. The gig was a huge success and a performance quality that has always been associated with the members of micro maureen was executed. It was a tight, professional, magical, musical bludgeoning. People where heard afterwards saying that no one was talking during the set, all eyes and ears where on the stage.
Ruben, Christian, Chowder, and Barry are micro maureen. They are digging in their heels; they are getting ready to start to push. Push live music, push what you hear, push you from your seat and into the aisle, push you to change the station and look for their songs or press start again and again and to push you to rethink what music is to you.

"So frequently compared to the Velvet Underground that they even portrayed the
legendary group in the 1996 film I Shot Andy Warhol, the Hoboken, New Jersey-based

their work with equal parts scholarly composure and fannish enthusiasm; prolific and mercurial,
Yo La Tengo ultimately transcended its myriad influences to ensconce itself as a beloved
institution of the indie community." - All Music Guide

Jazz critic Whitney Balliett once described jazz as "the sound of surprise." While Yo La Tengo don't play jazz, the description applies. For 13 years they have been a remarkably consistent, almost comforting presence on the American pop scene, yet we love their genius because they are not afraid to surprise us. New York magazine calls them "the most dearly treasured New York rock band of the decade," but Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan have always lived across the river in Hoboken. Their recording site of preference in recent years is Nashville, but they're not a country band. Their songs are smashed into sharp relief with seemingly disparate elements, but always emerge a beautiful, somehow coherent mess.

Yo La Tengo is not a jazz combo, but they think like jazz musicians. They constantly redefine their own boundaries, stretch their songs into new shapes, and often restructure their old songs into new forms. As rabid fans of music, Yo La Tengo choose from a wildly diverse selection of covers (Richard Thompson, Wire, John Cale, The Dead C, The Normal, Flamin' Groovies, and the Kinks comprise a small sampling) and make the songs their own, much like Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry deconstructing "Embraceable You." Like most great artists, they never regurgitate derivatively, synthesizing influences into music that only sounds like Yo La Tengo.

Yo La Tengo don't play jazz on their new album, but they play like jazz players. The now-telepathic interplay of Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew means the trio now approach their music as one entity; they are solid and powerful, comfortable enough to allow room for improvisation. Georgia's drumming is a gentle web, but tensile enough to support sheets of organ throb and guitar noise. James anchors integral melodies in ways bassists rarely do. Ira's wild throttling of his guitar is by now legendary, but his restraint in playing the perfect few quiet notes keeps the band walking their delicate tightrope while pushing the music forward. Listening to ATNTIIO, you get the impression these songs will continue to grow and expand, even as they've just been committed to tape.

While their colossal sonic achievements are well-documented, Yo La Tengo's new album is more In A Silent Way than Interstellar Space: a quietly intense melange of pulsing beats, acoustic guitar strum, ringing vibraphone and organ washes. Add electric guitar buzzing underneath dreamy, nearly whispered vocals, and ATNTIIO is more mood swing than song cycle.

Yo La Tengo have stripped away layers of electric guitar chaos from their sound. Is it so we can hear their voices? So they can hear each other? Whatever the reason, Georgia and Ira's most audible and distinctive vocal performances to date are genuinely intimate and affecting. The quieter settings allow other subtle details to emerge: guest Susie Ibarra's percussion on the first single, "Saturday," high close harmonies swelling in from nowhere, Hubley's delicate brushwork, the gorgeous shimmer of vibes and mellotron.

Pop culture references usually abound on Yo La Tengo track listings, and continue here. "Last Days of Disco" is a modal pop song, Ira reminiscing about a distant first meeting, his vocals and guitar cruising lightly over Georgia and James's polyrhythmic underpinning. "The Crying of Lot G," title suggestive of notoriously byzantine author Thomas Pynchon, is ironically the most lyrically naked and literal song on the album. It's also the most direct paean to the internal ebb and flow of love they've ever written, with Kaplan speak-singing "You say all we do is fight, and I think, 'Gee, I don't know if that's true...'" over an ambient 50's-style weeper. A cover of disco hitmaker George McRae's "You Can Have it All" follows and features Hubley sleepily declaring her heart over Kaplan's AM-radio "ba-ba-da"s ping-ponging in the background and funky soul string accents (courtesy engineer David Henry and his cello). The band's approach to disco cheese is loving and unironic and raises the song above its station in pop's hierarchy; it could be a Yo La Tengo song, whereas the next song, "Tears Are In Your Eyes" sounds achingly classic enough to be a cover of a lost country ballad.

Such are the gifts of Yo La Tengo. They are a pop band, but don't just write pop songs; they write what can only be described as Yo La Tengo songs. By not rocking out, Ira, Georgia and James have made a record which shows how tight-knit a musical unit the trio have become. They are like a three-cornered atom harnessing its energy to the point where blinding explosions are no longer necessary to emanate power.

Jazz critic Nat Hentoff once described jazz as "a continual autobiography, or rather a continuum of intersecting autobiographies, one's own and those of the musicians with whom one plays."

Yo La Tengo don't play jazz, but And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out is the sound of surprise, and it is the latest chapter in their fascinating autobiography.

1. Matthew Good

Matthew Good is back and -- while he's supposedly mellowed -- he is just as talkative as ever. He's also recorded and released his most ambitious musical project to date; a sprawling, 15-song epic entitled Avalanche, released under his name only, which features, among other things, the strings of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Matthew Good is on the Civic Centre Stage at 7:30 PM with the gates opening at 7:00 PM.

2. Youth Talent Contest

Presented by the Ottawa Sun and Professional Sound and Light. The Youth Talent Contest really sees the cream rising to the top in this adjudicated contest. Young contestants compete in three categories: vocal, dance and novelty. There are preliminary sessions which all lead to the semi-final showdowns. The finals crown third, second and first place with each receiving prize money. The winner moves on to the national championship, held this year in Regina, Saskatchewan. The semi-finals take place at 5:30 PM Friday August 22nd and Saturday August 23rd and the finals take place on Sunday August 24th at 5:30 PM. All Youth Talent rounds will be staged in the Salons of the Civic Centre at Lansdowne Park.

3. Zamora The Torture King

At SUPER EX for 3 days only, the Torture King is an act unlike any you have seen. He swallows swords, eats fire, and lies on a bed of nails after walking through broken glass. Easy you say? Well maybe but try replicating his finale - involving bicycle spokes through the bicep. Zamora, the Torture King has been featured on Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Guinness World Records, Maury Povich, 48 Hours, the Learning Channel and the Discovery Network.

The Torture King appears 3 times a day, August 22 to 24 ONLY on the Pizza Pizza stage at 5:30, 8:30 and 10:00 PM. Not for the squeamish!
